Predictably in the first game of the last 16, Germany comfortably brushed aside Sweden in a 4-1 victory. The main talking point was the rediscovered form of Celia Sasic, who first converted from the penalty spot before heading home from close range. Substitute Marozsan was also on the score sheet along with the usual suspect Mittag who leads the golden boot race with 5 goals.
The early morning kick off between China and Cameroon was a fiery contest. After an early goal from Wang Shanshan, who is fast becoming an out of position Mondogoal legend, China held off a lively Cameroon until the break. The second half was much less intense as both sides begun to tire, but China held on and deservedly progress through to play either Colombia or the USA in the next round.
Now we move onto the next three fixtures, while providing some tips to help you construct your own
Mondogoal team. Today we are backing the obvious favourites Brazil and France, before rounding off our team with single players from Switzerland and Korea Republic.
GOALKEEPER TIPS
Luciana (5m) vs. Australia
Brazil is the only country that is yet to concede in this tournament. Luciana is the final hurdle in a strong defensive unit, which kept five clean sheets in the seven qualifying matches. We can all agree that Brazil have not been firing on all cylinders, in terms of their offensive play, during the group stages, but despite this, their back 5 have looked solid and assured throughout. A clean sheet looks on the cards.
DEFENDER TIPS
Wendie Renard (3.6m) vs. Korea Republic
The towering centre half has become one of the mainstays in our WWC Mondogoal teams. Renard at just 24 years of age is captain and plays with such confidence and composure that many mistake her for being one of France's most experienced players. She is very intelligent and reads the game effortlessly, as shown with her 14 interceptions in 3 games. Renard also enjoys roaming forward to begin attacking moves and 16 goals in 65 appearances is not a bad international record for a defender either.
Monica (4.3m) vs. Australia
We think it is a great idea to double up (Luciana + Monica) on the Brazil back 5. Monica, surprisingly the cheapest Brazil defender listed on Mondogoal, has been a rock at the back. She has not committed any fouls so far in the tournament, but this is partly due to being rarely tested. A consistent player with a score of 7pts in her previous three fixtures.
Laure Boulleau (6m) vs. Korea Republic
To complete the defence we have gone for France's left back Laure Boulleau. She is a very experienced player with 57 caps, as well as 155 appearances for French giants PSG. Boulleau, like her teammate Renard, has scored consistently on Mondogoal during the group stage phase with a point per game average of 8.16. As a left back who is accomplished at both defending and attacking she will pick up quite a few interception/tackling points.
MIDFIELDER TIPS
Andressa Alves (6.1m) vs. Australia
We think that Andressa Alves is the best choice if you plan to include a Brazil midfielder. After been rested for her sides 1-0 win vs. Costa Rica, she will be raring to go. Alves will find herself in wide positions, flanking either Marta or Christiane, so has plenty to look for in the box. Sides who play Brazil tend to get drawn towards closing down/marking Marta, so Alves has to grab her chance and exploit this.
Camille Abily (9.3m) vs. Korea Republic
Abily has been unlucky not to have any goals or assists to her name in this tournament so far. She often builds up play and must be up there as one of the players to have completed the most successful passes (173). Abily is capable of whipping in some great set pieces and with Korea's lack of aerial dominance, she could be on for an assist or two. Abily regularly scores 10+ goals a season at club level, so hopefully she can start to display this goal scoring ability on the national stage.
Fabienne Humm (8.9m) vs. Canada
Humm was disappointing vs. Cameroon in a somewhat withdrawn display from her side. We will however keep faith in her manager (to start her) and in Humm to rediscover her form, which saw her bang in a hat trick in just 5 minutes vs. Ecuador. A risky pick, but with 8 shots on target this tournament, obviously has an eye for goal.
Jeon Ga-eul (7.3m) vs. France
A player's momentum is key for Mondogoal and this is why I've gone for Jeon Ga-eul. We were very impressed with her displays against both Spain and Costa Rica. She is described as a left-winger, but she plays in more of an inside left position. This makes it hard for opponents to pick her up and she often becomes the second striker. Another reason to pick Jeon Ga-eul is that she's a ‘foul magnet' (6 fouls suffered in tournament). If Korea can put pressure on the France defence, we believe that she will be at the heart of it.
FORWARD TIPS
Eugenie Le Sommer (8.6m) vs. Korea Republic
Le Sommer was excellent in the group stages and has established herself as one of the most clinical forwards in the tournament. She bagged a brace on Wednesday vs. Mexico, even though one was unintended, which brings her to three goals in as many games. It was a hard decision between Le Sommer and Delie, but the former is nailed on to start and will most likely play more minutes.
Marta (14.7m) vs. Australia
The five time FIFA Women's Player of the Year winner struggled to find form in the group stages of the competition. With her recent statement "We have to be precise. We have to be focused for a final, because every game from now on is a final." Marta seems fired up to do the business and we are backing her to shine from here on out. With an incredible 93 goals in 94 appearances for Brazil, you would have to be crazy to leave her out.
Ramona Bachmann (10.8m) vs. Canada
Bachmann is the type of striker that leaves you screaming at your TV, when you have her in your Mondogoal team. She seems to acquire an unlimited number of chances to score in every game she plays, but her finishing has let her down. She could have scored a hat trick vs. Cameroon and there's no doubt that she will get chances vs. Canada. Bachmann has a great touch and her movement off the ball is first class, the question is ‘will she find her finishing boots'? If she does a big score will follow.
