Goalkeepers:
The main scoring points for goalkeepers are keeping a clean sheet (3pts), making three saves (2pts) and the less easy to predict penalty save (5pts). They also don't suffer too much from deductions with three goals conceded (-1pt) only coming with a minimal penalty.
It obviously pays to select a keeper who gathers both a clean sheet (3pts) and three saves (2pts), but with just one point separating each action, it's not a bad idea to focus fundamentally on which keeper is going to make the saves as that's arguably easier to predict than a clean sheet.
Last season there was four goalkeepers who averaged at over three saves per game, these were J. Butland (3.29), H. Gomes (3.21), Adrian (3.15) and L. Fabianski (3.08).
This indicates that goalkeepers from mid-table clubs tend to compliment Bet4theBest's scoring system as they're forced to make a lot of saves whilst still offering a reasonable chance of keeping a clean sheet.
Defenders:
As mentioned in the goalkeeper selection, a clean sheet will considerably boost your chances of topping the leaderboard. A defender is rewarded the same number of points (3pts) for a shutout as your keeper, so keep this in mind when finalising your eleven.
In addition to clean sheets, defenders have a number of others way they can tally up points. A goal from a defender (8pts) is the highest point return available on Bet4theBest. This trumps both midfielders and forwards who only receive 5 points.
It doesn't stop there, defenders are rewarded with 5 points for an assist which once again dwarfs other positions, with midfielders (2pts) and forwards (1pts) receiving an amount that doesn't seem significant in comparison.
To put this into perspective, a defender who finds the net is as valuable as a forward who contributes with a goal and three assists… and that's without the inclusion of potential clean sheet points.
Full-backs who contribute heavily to their team's wing play also occasionally profit from winning three corners (2pts). This helps increase the potential of full backs in comparison to goal-scoring centre backs, as an assist and three corners won equates to 7pts, just one less than a defender goal (8pts).
Finally, provoking two offsides (1pt) comes with a small bonus. This makes side who play with a high defensive line (e.g. Man City) slightly more appealing, however it pales in significance to attacking points so isn't worth building a team around.
To conclude, locating defenders who are very attack-minded and offer a goal-threat from set-piece situations is essential.
Midfielders & Forwards:
As we previously mentioned, the Bet4theBest scoring system heavily favours goals (5pts) over assists (2pts), therefore it pays to select midfielders with the highest goalscoring potential.
On the other hand, forwards are rewarded even less for an assist than midfielders (1pt) which makes them arguably redundant. Meanwhile, a goal (5pts) is worth the same for a forward as a midfielder.
In addition to goals and assists, midfielders and forwards also tally up points from winning three corners (1pt) and drawing three fouls (1pt). A clean sheet (+1pt) is also worth a point for midfielders.
Although these are only small point returns, it's not uncommon to see a midfielder claim all three. However, it's unwise to select players who complement these scoring aspects due to their small returns.
Here's where things get tougher. Bet4theBest deduct points for every 3 shots off target (-2pt) and don't reward any attackers for their efforts (shots on target for example). To put this into perspective, a striker who makes two assists and has three shots off target will have 0pts.
Attackers who find themselves shooting from range and rarely hit the target are definitely ones to avoid. Whilst other daily fantasy sites reward points for shots (on/off target), Bet4theBest punish inefficient attacking play and favour those who find the net.
