Gameweek 7 Captain & Player Picks

Share post on:

Holly Shand from Fantasy Football Community returns with captaincy corner and her three player picks in three positions for Gameweek 7.

Gameweek 6 ended up being pretty fruitful for captaincy. There was certainly an upturn in fortunes throughout the weekend, after City's teamsheet for Watford initially stung Sterling owners. Plenty of managers lucked out with their Vice-Captain, given the likes of Salah, Aguero and De Bruyne walked away with decent fantasy points. Other premium options like Kane and Aubamayeng also delivered this week.

Keep an eye on minutes in the Carabao Cup this week before committing to your captain. And also, remember to give your vice captain pick some thought as you'll never know when they might be needed! It's important to bear in mind that Champions League and Europa League action returns immediately after Gameweek 8. With Manchester City and Liverpool both having games on the road this weekend, it could be a tricky decision where captaincy is involved.

Captaincy Corner

The shield pick is likely to be the most captained player of the week, allowing you to play safe and keep pace with the pack. The sword pick will be a less popular selection: if they perform it can shoot you up the overall rankings, but the risk from failure is higher.

Shield Pick: Mohammed Salah vs Sheffield United (A)
Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 17/20

Mo Salah looks set to be the most captained player this weekend. He has momentum on his side, with Sterling faltering, having blanked just once so far this season. It's now four goals and three assists, plus bonus in every game in which he's found the back of the net. This week Liverpool face promoted side Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. The Blades have had a fairly easy start to the season, so it will be interesting to see how they fare in this game to a side as attack-minded as Liverpool. It's Salah who will be looking to break down this defence, who've conceded just six goals in six games. There's a bit of a concern over Salah's away form: he's got just two assists on the road, struggling to make a mark against Southampton and Burnley. Will you play safe with the Shield Pick?

Sword Pick: Kevin De Bruyne vs Everton (A)
Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 27/10

De Bruyne has been so consistent for Manchester City this season, delivering in every Premier League start and challenging Aguero for the crown of leading fantasy asset. He's now added goals to his game too. It's two goals and four assists in his last four league games and he will be heavily relied upon this weekend to unlock the Everton defence. Pep will need him to improve on his tally of seven assists for the season so far. His record against Everton is a little shaky, which is a reflection of City's performances against them in recent seasons. With just two assists in the road, the away fixture causes some concern once more. Are you going to take a risk in selecting the Sword Pick?

Holly's Hopefuls

I share my top three players for each Gameweek, selecting one defender, one midfielder and one striker. These are players that I'm tipping for the FPL Dream Team and they could also make intriguing differential captain decisions for you to consider too.

DEF: Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Sheffield United (A)

Alexander-Arnold finally delivered the goal he's been threatening with all season. He's now grabbed four attacking returns in six games which more than makes up for a shortage of clean sheets for this Liverpool side. The fixture provides great promise: Sheffield United aren't known for their attacking prowess. On the other hand, it will take something special to break them down and we know Trent's delivery into the box is the sort of quality that can open up even the most resolute defences. His 11 point haul against Burnley shows his worth.

MID: Heung-Min Son vs Southampton (H)

It's great to see Son featuring as a consistent fantasy option once more. He's building a solid relationship up front with Kane, providing some all-important pace in this Spurs attack. It's now two goals and two assists in his last three games. A home game against Southampton is a fixture that Son usually excels in. Over the past four seasons, he's amassed three goals and two assists in this fixture. I wouldn't be surprised to see him feature in the Gameweek 7 Dream Team.

FOR: Jamie Vardy vs Newcastle (H)

Leicester really pulled it out of the bag against Spurs last weekend and are making their mark towards the top of the Premier League table. A home game against struggling Newcastle is a great opportunity for them to bank another three points. Vardy has had an inconsistent start to the season, but has still managed three goals and one assist. He's also on penalties which could be another potential source of points.

Until next time…
Good luck!
