Welcome to the latest article in a new series for the 2020/21 Fantasy Premier League season from @FPL_Heisenberg for FPL Bet. In this weekly series, Heisenberg will be looking into the best captaincy options, as well as ‘outside of the box' captaincy choices for each Gameweek. Heisenberg has a proven track record in FPL, having finished inside the top 32k in each of the last 6 seasons, including a best finish of 836th. Let's cook!
I'm going to shake things up a little bit, highlighting four main captains instead of three, with two from Spurs and two from Liverpool.
Gameweek 7 Captains:
Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son (Fixture: Brighton, home)
These two have been in blistering form this season, combining for nine goals in just six premier League games this season. They were largely stifled in Gameweek 6 against a stubborn Burnley defence, but an unlikely headed assist from Kane and a headed goal from Son meant that the goal combinations just keep adding up as they chase down Frank Lampard's and Didier Drogba's all time Premier League record � with 29 to the Chelsea pair's 36.
Harry Kane really is looking back to his absolute best in front of goal, add to this with his new found assist threat, we have Harry Kane back as a genuine captaincy contender against any opposition.
Moving onto the goal threat stats, Kane has taken the joint most shots (alongside Salah) so far this season with 29, has the most shots on target with 13, the fourth most shots in the box with 19 and has the fourth highest expected goals with 4.40.
Kane has been a goal threat for many years in the Premier League, but his assist threat is something he's added to his game. His passing ability has always been exceptional, but tactically he was more the man to get on the end of passes, now he's dropping into the number 10 position at times to feed the lightning quick lethal finisher Heung-Min Son. The stats show how much better he's become creatively, with the highest expected assists score in the league with 4.28, the most big chances created with 8 and the most assists with 8.
However, maybe you fancy putting the armband on his teammate, the South Korean international Son. Benefitting from Harry Kane's new found creativity, Heung-Min Son � the top goal scorer in the league with 8 goals � is a genuine captaincy option. He now tops the charts in terms of overall points, the underlying statistics show that this is no fluke as he's in the top 3 for expected FPL points metric as well, alongside Kane and Salah.
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane (Fixture: West Ham, Home)
It's time to take a look at the deadly duo from Liverpool now, Salah and Mane.
Salah is yet again a great choice for captaincy in Gameweek 7, he's coming into this game off the back of a blank against Sheffield United, but he was unlucky not to register any points with a nicely taken goal correctly ruled out for a slight offside, and, a big chance which hit the post.
The Egyptian King has started the season well overall, with six goals and an assist in just six league games. He's taken 29 shots in the box so far this season, the joint highest (with Harry Kane) in the Premier League this season. According to Fantasy Football Hub's expected goals (xG) metric, he has an xG of 4.74, the highest of any player. His assist threat is good too, with an expected assists score of 3.07, second only to Harry Kane for that metric so it could be argued he's been unfortunate only to register one assist so far this season, especially as he has created 4 big chances this season too.
If you fancy an ‘outside of the box' captain who's also a premium asset owned by less than 10% of FPL managers, then Salah's Senegalese teammate Mane could be the one for you.
When looking at xG per game (which is a fairer way of looking at Mane due to him missing a game) he comes out second for all players and when looking at non-penalty xG per game, he is the highest. Therefore, the chances of Mane getting a goal in any given game are high, and he also has some assist threat as demonstrated in Gameweek 6 with two assists.
‘Outside of the Box' captains:
As mentioned above, Mane is a nice differential captain as he's currently owned by less than 10% of managers. Therefore, he is a premium player but is also in the category of “outside the box” and therefore if he fires you could really shoot up the rankings.
Danny Ings (Fixture: Leeds, Home)
Although the Southampton talisman is currently selected by under 19% of FPL players at the time of writing, he will still be a huge captain differential, with your mini-league rivals likely to captain one of the premium assets like Salah, Kane, Son etc.
The Saints number 9 will be full of confidence following 4 goals and 2 assists in the first six Premier League fixtures of the season. If he can keep that attacking momentum going, then Ings could score well away an Aston Villa side that just let three goals in at home to Leeds.
It's also worth remembering that Ings is Southampton's penalty taker, giving him that extra route to potential points which is always nice for your FPL captain.
