Premier League GW30 Saturday 14th March 2020
We're now in the final stretch of this Premier League season and with Liverpool's fingertips being placed on the title, we could finally crown our champions be the end of Monday night's Merseyside Derby.
Should that be the case, it will need the lesser spotted event of three successive Manchester City league defeats and although it is not outside the realm of possibility, it might mean that the champagne has to be put on ice for at least another week.
Of course, there is more than one sub-plot to any season and with the battle to avoid the drop intensifying with each week that passes, there will surely be a few more twists and turns between now and the end of the campaign.
While talking of drama, it's the moment that you've all been waiting for and some quarters are even saying it's their favourite time of the week. Yes, that's right, it is time for another round of numerical excellence, courtesy of….
Did You Know?
Aston Villa have been losing at both half time and full time in their last 4 matches (Premier League). Dean Smith's men do have a game in hand, but at this stage of the campaign you simply cannot beat points on the board.
In addition to that, Aston Villa have conceded the most goals through individual errors in the Premier League this season, with 10. Something that could go a long way to deciding their fate on the final day, if not before.
Jamie Vardy's brace against Aston Villa on Monday has seen the Leicester forward go clear at the top of the Golden Boot charts. That now takes him to 19 goals for the season and it seems when he ticks, so do the Foxes.
James Maddison (Leicester) has made the most key passes from set pieces in the Premier League this season, with 36. Will the midfielder feature in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad this Summer, perhaps the game against Italy at the end of this month will offer an indication.
Then again, will that friendly even take place? What with the Coronavirus doing its very best to bring the world to its knees. It's time like this, when you do have to remember that Football is only a game.
Of the top 10 goal scorers at the time of writing, Sadio Mane has made the smallest percentage contribution to his club. His 14 goals equate to just 21% of Liverpool's overall total, a stat that signifies they are capable of scoring goals all over the pitch.
Jorginho has now picked up the most Premier League bookings this season with 10. However, he is not deemed to be the player with the highest level of ill-discipline, as that honour is bestowed to our good friend Jefferson Lerma, with the Bournemouth midfielder picking up nine bookings and a red card.
Talking of Bournemouth, Diego Rico (Bournemouth) has made the most interceptions in the Premier League this season, with 66. Let's from this day forward call him, "THE INTERCEPTOR"
Brighton have extended their Premier League run without a win to nine matches and although the Seagulls are on the right side of the dotted line for now, they are going to have to end that run as soon as possible. Otherwise it could be EFL Championship action next time around.
Crystal Palace have the current longest streak of clean sheets earned with 3, a tally that coincides with their winning streak and with safety now all but assured, Roy Hodgson has certainly earned his one-year contract extension.
Norwich have given away the most penalties in the Premier League this season, with 7. Stats like that, will equate to relegation.
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) has had the most open play or fastbreak attempts in the Premier League this season, with 80. He's also got a goal to game ratio of 0.7 for Liverpool in the Premier League, that is very impressive and the kind of ratio that if he stayed long enough on Merseyside, could see him as the competition's record goal scorer.
Burnley have had the most shots cleared off the line in the Premier League this season, with 5. That chance against Arsenal recently springs to mind, apart from that I cannot remember the other four. Text in your answers and you could win some autographed throat sweets from Sean Dyche.
