GW5 Stats - The Top Ten

Share post on:

Premier League GW5 Starts Saturday 17th October 2020

Thankfully the first international break of the season has been cleared and with that hurdle now out of the way, the focus shifts back to the Premier League, as the race for early FPL points increases in its intensity.

This part of the campaign is usually a good time to take stock of proceedings and decide whether to go wild in terms of playing your trump card and if you are to make wholesale changes, you may what to have a quick glance at our latest blast of statistical analysis.

Just like in the four previous of articles of the season, we are going to start with the top 10 overall points scorers (players not managers) and it is a table that currently looks as follows:

Much has been made regarding the partnership between Hueng-min Son and Harry Kane and with an abundance of goals and assists thus far, their on-pitch efforts have been converted to a hatful of FPL points.

The Tottenham pair filled their boots against Manchester United before the international break and due to the performance of their South Korean star, it has meant that Son has moved six places up the table into top spot.

With the 28-year-old currently winning the inter-club bragging rights over Kane, he takes a one-point lead into week five of the season and if these two push each other to new FPL heights, it will only mean good things as far as Tottenham are concerned.

Rounding out the top three is Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and although he and his teammates would have had a night to forget at Villa Park, the Egyptian international can at least take solace at finding the net on two separate occasions.

He finds himself sitting above Dominic Calvert-Lewin and with the Everton forward also bagging his first goal for England, he will now hope he is sitting on the proverbial plane for next summer's European Championship.

A statement that can also be applied to Jack Grealish and after pulling the strings in Aston Villa's 7-2 win over Liverpool, he will also hope that come the end the season he has done enough to be a part of Gareth Southgate's 23-man squad.

Grealish is currently joint fifth in the table and he shares this accolade with Everton's James Rodriguez and with a slew of impressive performances, he is quickly silencing any doubters regarding his move to Merseyside.

In joint seventh, it is a case of two England strikers one past and one hoping he is still present and if the former can keep finding the net with regularity himself, who knows if Jamie Vardy will be pulling on the Three Lions once again?

Sharing his current standing in the FPL table is Callum Wilson and after already scoring four times for Newcastle, he is quickly becoming one of the most astute purchases that the Magpies have made in recent times.

In ninth is Brighton forward Neal Maupay and although the Seagulls' overall performance arguably deserves more points, the former Brentford man will be happy with his early offerings at The AMEX Stadium.

While rounding out the top 10 is Patrick Bamford of Leeds United and with him being the fifth highest English forward in the list, it shows that Gareth Southgate is not short of talent in this department (while not even mentioning the likes of Danny Ings or Marcus Rashford)

What is interesting in this week's top 10, is the fact that there are no defensive representation. Although I guess that is what happens when there are so many goals being scored in the Premier League to date.

Of course, you are going to need defenders in your team, but does this suggest that less value should be apportioned to this area of the pitch and instead, it is a case of going big in terms of both creative midfielders or those men charged with getting those all-important goals.
