Premier League GW17 Starts Friday 1st January 2021

Depending on what side of the New Year border you are reading this, it is either 2020 or 2021. Regardless of whether you are in the future or the past, firstly a happy New Year to all the readers of this esteemed website.

Now with the pleasantries out of the way, it is time to get down to business and that business, is the small matter of FPL. A business so big, it could rival some of the largest conglomerates of industry today.

However, now is not the time to stop and marvel at its size, instead now is the time to talk points and although there was not an abundance of them being dished out in GW16, there were still enough to keep the wheels greased.

Which means, it is once again time to talk stock and have a look at the players that you should be investing in this coming January and the best way to do that, is by taking a glimpse at the current top 10 highest points scoring players.

There's no change at the point of the pyramid, as Mohamed Salah stays top of the shop. The Liverpool midfielder (in this game at least) may have drawn a frustrating blank against Newcastle, but he still had enough of a buffer points wise and this means the status quo currently remains.

With that said, there is movement elsewhere and with Bruno Fernandes moving up to second, it means that the high-flying Tottenham duo of Hueng-min Son and Harry Kane have seemingly flown too close to the sun.

Fernandes' exploits against Wolves, means he is now a point clear of Son in second, while Harry Kane's lack of form (Fulham postponement notwithstanding) means he is stuck in fourth and six points behind his South Korean cohort.

Of course, Tottenham were rested after a late postponement and the same cannot be said about Jamie Vardy who failed to make any real inroads on his former England teammate, which means he stays lying fifth.

Patrick Bamford's impressive points haul against West Brom means that his sixth place is solidified and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin inactive due to Manchester City's coronavirus outbreak, it means he failed to add to his tally.

Jack Grealish had minimal impact against Chelsea and stays in eighth place. While Wilfried Zaha's efforts against Leicester, meant that the Ivorian has now leapfrogged Newcastle Callum Wilson to ninth.

The highest scoring defender is no longer Kurt Zouma of Chelsea. Instead, it is Andy Robinson of Liverpool and with the Scottish international keeping a defensive clean sheet on Wednesday night, he now finds himself on 79 points.

Did You Know?

There have been under 2.5 goals scored in 11 of Man City's last 12 games (Premier League). They avoided the opportunity to add to that tally in midweek, but will there be more goals when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge?

Sheff Utd have lost 10 of their last 11 matches (Premier League). What price would you put on another defeat this Saturday?

Fulham have drawn their last 4 matches (Premier League). Scott Parker's men are hard to beat but are perhaps lacking cutting edge when it really matters. Can they find it against Burnley?

Luke Ayling (Leeds) has attempted the most passes off the ground in the Premier League this season, with 157. Welcome to Bielsa ball.

Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) has attempted the most crosses excluding corners in the Premier League this season, with 95. Interesting that he is pretty much playing at the same level as last season, whereas Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right-hand side is not.

Also, Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) has attempted the most passes in the opposition half in the Premier League this season, with 858.

Mason Mount (Chelsea) has made the most accurate crosses from corners in the Premier League this season, with 20. It's also interesting, that Chelsea have scored eight goals from set pieces this season.

While Liverpool have scored the most goals from open play with 21.
