Ah…the international break is over and back to the real football again. It may just be the depressing nature of being a Scotland Fan that means the break from the domestic fixtures brings with it nothing but dread, but I can't be alone in thinking that its good to be back to normality. FPL managers will of course be back poring over all the details of the players who did well, those who did badly and those we will need to sweat over for fitness. So lets dive into the fixtures and see what we have in store…
helsea v Manchester United
The weekend kicks off in style with two massive teams clashing at Stamford Bridge. Sarri's men look to continue their good form to stay in the title race, whilst Jose will be again wondering what Utd will show up. Chelsea looked good in a convincing 3-0 win last time out and aside from the Hazard show, Barkley showed why he has been in and around the team too. His impressive showing for England will not go unnoticed, and at £5.7m is a cheap option in midfield. Pedro should come back into contention also. The Red Devils were staring down the barrel after going 2-0 down at Old Trafford vs Newcastle but rallied to win 3-2, Sanchez notching the late winner. The Chilean will hop to bring that form into this game, as will Rashford who notched for England in Seville midweek. Lukaku remains the most potent goal threat, but Utd will face a tough task here.
Prediction CHE 2 1 MNU
AFC Bournemouth v Southampton
Bournemouth's good early season form was further shown in their 4-0 thumping of Watford. The win was the Cherries biggest away win in their PL history, and was completed with Eddie Howe maintaining they could play better. Brooks continued his scoring form, and the front 2 of Wilson and King also scored but Ake was the best player on the park and can be picked up at £5m for your team. Southampton were well beaten by Chelsea, and will hope to perform better here in this South Coast clash. They will again look to the like of Ings and Long to fire the goals. The Saints need to stiffen things at the back if they are to survive this season. Hoedt is their most in form defender and he will be a key man if they are to escape with anything from the Vitality.
Prediction BOU 3-1 SOU
Cardiff City v Fulham
In the Welsh capital, we have 2 sides who will be desperate to win and put some points on the board to pull themselves up the table. Both lost in their last fixture, both to the 2 North London giants, but in different manners. The narrow 1-0 at Wembley with only 10 men may have given Warnock and his men something to build on here and they will look to keep the downward pressure on the Cottagers who were soundly beaten by Arsenal. Cardiff continue to struggle in front of goal having only scored 4 in 8 games so this will need to be rectified if they are to haul them selves off the bottom of the table. Big games needed from the likes of Paterson, Zohore and Ward if they are involved. Fulham will want to improve on recent games and get back to some form that they showed in earlier games. Mitrovic is key as their main man up top, and he comes back with 2 goals from International duty so should be brimming with confidence. Anguissa and Seri need to be more solid in midfield too. The big player of last season, Sessengnon, is still to spark this term, Saturday would be a perfect time to start.
Prediction CAR 1-1 FUL
Manchester City v Burnley City welcome Burnley to the Etihad, and Pep will be sweating on the return of so many of his players from their international teams, and the travel and game time could have an effect on team selection ahead of a busy period upcoming. De Bruyne was seen training well over the break and could come into contention. The missed opportunity at Anfield to win the big title clash may still be weighing on some, Mahrez in particular, but the talent pool available is such that whoever lines up in Sky Blue will start the game off as favourites. Sterling will be on cloud nine after his 2 goal salvo vs Spain for his country, and he will hope to gun down Burnley here. The Clarets will have been disappointed not to take full points against Huddersfield, but the early season worries over relegation would appear to be quelled now. Dyche and his team have seven points from their past three Premier League games, having collected just three points in the 10 before that. Gudmundson has been in good form the past few games and Vokes hit the target over the international break for Wales too. They will hope Hart has a happy return to his old stomping ground too
Prediction MNC 3-0 BUR
Newcastle United v Brighton & Hove Albion
The Magpies were close to an amazing result at Old Trafford in their last outing, and the late goal will have been a hammer blow to them. Benitez must be worrying as his men find themselves 2nd bottom but they do have a decent run of games ahead. They need to start putting points on the board n this period and key to that will be the form of players like Kenedy and Muto who found the net in the last game. Dubravka has been performing relatively well in goal and needs to keep some clean sheets to back that up. Brighton nabbed a good 1-0 at home to West Ham, and they will come to Newcastle without fear. Their home form is much better, with only 1 point gained on the road in 4 games so far and they will want to improve here. Glenn Murray continues to be their talisman, and he will need to be among the goals here if they are to bring points away. Dunk and Duffy also need to be strong at the back.
Prediction NEW 1-0 BHA
West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur
The London Stadium hosts this London derby and the Hammers will want to step up their level after losing at Brighton. They welcome a Spurs side who have still more issues with injuries and many players returning from International exploits. Arnautovic was back last time out and he scored whilst away with Austria, so will hope to bring that form into the weekend. After a shaky start, players like Noble and Zabaleta have begun showing their class and they will look to guide the others around them. Spurs will look to see how the likes of Dier, Trippier and Kane return from England duty, as they continue to struggle with injuries to other key players. The return of Lloris in goal is an undoubted boost and Poch will hope to see his team win on the road again. Spurs have won 4 out of 5 so far away this season.
Prediction WHU 1-2 TOT
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Watford
Wolves continue to impress on their return to the top flight, winning away at Palace in their last game and sitting 7th in the early season table. Nuno's men have been afforded the luxury of a settled XI and the performances of Doherty in particular on the right flank have been a pleasure, capped with his winner at Selhurst Park. The probing and prompting of the Portuguese duo of Moutinho and Neves will be key if they are to keep this form up throughout the season. Watford will be keen to cleanse themselves of the terrible performance last time out vs Bournemouth. Watford have slipped from the run which saw them top of the table a few games ago, and they will want to pick up something on the road here in the Midlands. Chalobah showed his undoubted potential performing well for England, and the front 2 of Gray and Deeney are central to the way Watford play. An interesting match for sure.
Prediction WOL 1 -1 WAT
Huddersfield Town v Liverpool
The Town fans will be hoping their team put on a show for the TV cameras that will descend on the John Smiths on Saturday tea-time for the visit of the title chasing Reds. A good point picked up in Burnley may kick start their season, but they have the problem of not having enough goals in the side so far and 6 home league games without a goal is evidence to that. They face a tough task to keep out a Liverpool side in very good form so far, so Lossl and Zanka will have to stand tall to repel their advances. Depoitre again should lead the line but hopefully not be showing his diving skills this week. Liverpool's international break has meant the Anfield treatment room has been busy this week with 5 players reporting back with injuries. Many FPL hearts skipped a beat when Salah had to go off injured, but he should make it where those backing Mane (like me) will not be so lucky. Look for Shaqiri to deputise for the Senegalese and he could be a big player this season for when the front 3 need a rest.
Prediction HUD 0-3 LIV
Everton v Crystal Palace
The sole Sunday match sees Hodgson take his Palace side to Mersey side to face an Everton side finally starting to play up to the type of football we had come to expect preseason. The creative runs of Bernard set up their 1st and the exquisite striking from Sigurdsson gained the 3 pts at Leicester, and these 2 will need to again be the men to provide the flair for the Toffees here. Richarlison was deployed as a centre forward in that game and expect to see him in that role again. Palace will be sweating on the fitness of Zaha, who aggravated an injury whilst away with Ivory Coast. He is key for the Eagles and his absence would be a bitter blow, especially with Benteke now out long term after his operation. Wickham stepped up fitness over the break in a friendly and could come right into contention here.
Prediction EVE 2-1 CRY
Arsenal v Leicester City
Monday night brings the curtain down on the weekend at the Emirates and The Gunners will hope to carry their form from Fulham into this one. They blew Fulham away in the 2nd half and fully deserved their 5-1 win. Ramsey netted a contender for goal of the season, and he will continue to be a vital player, even if it looks likely he will leave in the summer on a Bosman. Lacazette seems to be settling into a goalscoring groove and Aubamayeng reacted to being benched by scoring twice once on the pitch. Leicester had a ding dong battle with Everton last time out, but eventually lost out. Chilwell impressed in both England games along side Maguire and these 2 will need to keep that form going into this game if they are to get anything out of London. Vardy retired form England duty to keep himself fresh for games like this, and he continues to be the beating heart of this team.
Prediction ARS 3-1 LEI
A few crackers lined up then, and the selections after all the bumps and bruises of International week will be interesting as mangers may decide to rotate. Here's to another great FPL week, and until next time….
LET'S GO!!!
