Gameweek 17 Fixture Preview

Share post on:
Premier League Predictions GW17 By PaulT After a more reasonable time off from FPL action, we have GW 17 upon us and the fixtures again have some great matches ahead, not least the small local disagreement at Infield. The big performer of GW 16 was the man that made many an FPL team last year, Mo Salah. His 21-point haul made him the clear standout performer, but there were honourable mentions for David Luiz, Son Heung Min and Marcus Rashford. Let jump into this weekend's games then and see what we have in store...

Manchester City v Everton

The Champions have finally been beaten, this is not a drill, they have finally been beaten. Pep's men were beaten at The Bridge and will look to bounce back against the Toffees here in the lunchtime kick off. They come into the match in 2nd place but did have a good win in the end in the Champions League on Wednesday night. City have a 100 per cent record in their eight-home league matches this season and have scored 30 goals and conceded just five in that time. They look likely to be without former Evertonian Stones who limped off in the Hoffenheim match and will continue to miss David Silva and De Bruyne. Aguero has now missed their last 4 matches in all comps and City will want their main man back as soon as possible. Everton have only won one of their last five league matches and have dropped down to seventh in the league. The late winner from Digne means they come into the match on a bit more of a high than might have been. Silva recently suggested he would play a three-man defence to accommodate Zouma, Mina and Keane and could implement that approach on Saturday. Prediction MNC 3-2 EVE

Crystal Palace v Leicester City

At Selhurst Park, The Eagles will be looking to soar as they welcome The Foxes in what will be a very interesting game although neither side are in particularly brilliant form at the moment. Palace have only won three league matches all season, and have lost 2 after picking up their first home win last time out at Selhurst Park. They start the weekend two points and two places above the bottom three and will be without key men Zaha and Tomkins through suspension. Wickham and Dann are back in contention this weekend whilst Schlupp will look to start after scoring off the bench last time out. Leicester's seven-match unbeaten run came to an end against Tottenham last time out where they suffered a 2-0 defeat. Scoring goals has been a problem for the Foxes of late. They have only scored more than once in one of their last nine league outings. Vardy returned to training in midweek after recovering from a groin injury and is expected to play, so that give them a bigger threat. Chilwell will have a late fitness test and could see his England squad mate Maguire back in beside him too. Prediction CRY 1-1 LEI

Huddersfield Town v Newcastle United

2 teams who were narrowly beaten last time out meet here at the John Smith's stadium and both will hope to change recent fortunes. Huddersfield were on what looked like a mini revival but have now lost the last 3 in a row, whilst Newcastle, who had also looked to be gaining form in recent weeks, have now no wins in 3. This makes it a fixture very hard to call, but both sides will fancy chances of a win. The Terriers lost Mooy and Smith to long-term injuries this week and the absence of the former is a big blow for David Wagner's side, as the Australian is one of the sides most creative forces. Billing returns from suspension but Mounie is still banned. For the visitors, Schor returns from suspension and he could take Fernandez's place in defence, as the latter is now an injury doubt. Yedlin serves a one-match ban this weekend after being sent off in the defeat at home to Wolves. Kenedy will hope to replace Atsu in the team after returning from injury. Prediction HUD 1-2 NEW

Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley

At Wembley, and Spurs will come into the game full of confidence after winning through to the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday. The 1-1 draw in the Camp Nou will be a shot in the arm to Spurs and Poch will hope his side can play as well as they did in Spain. They welcome a Burnley side who ended an eight-match winless run with a narrow 1-0 win over Brighton last week and Dyche will hope to use that as a springboard to improve their fortunes. Sanchez, Trippier, Aurier and Foyth are all doubts but with a hectic schedule ahead none may be risked. Moura may start on the bench, despite his heroics in midweek. For the Clarets, Gudmundsson and Defour are doubts, with Lennon in line to deputise. Dyche will not tinker much after last weekends win, so expect very few changes. Prediction TOT 3-1 BUR

Watford v Cardiff City

Vicarage Road for the next match as Gracia's men welcome the Welsh side for a match between sides with different recent form. Watford are now winless in 7 matches, but will be aggrieved having dropped 2 points with the last kick in the game at Everton. They welcome a Cardiff side who seem to be on a pattern of win/loss/win over their past 6 matches. Both sides will be coming into the game fancying a win here. Capoue is still suspended for the home side and Janmaat, Hughes and Gray are doubts. Expect Chalobah and Deloufeu to start. Cardiff have no reason to make any changes after last weekend's 1-0 win over Southampton, though the likes of Ralls and Hoilett will push for recalls. Prediction WAT 2-1 CAR

Wolverhampton Wanderers v AFC Bournemouth

At Molyneux, Wolves welcome Bournemouth as they look to keep up their recent winning run. They have grabbed maximum points in their last 2 games after a run of 6 league games without a win. Whilst they have rediscovered their early season form, Bournemouth have now lost 5 of their last 6 games, a statistic which is surprising as they have been impressive most weeks. The 4-0 loss to Liverpool was very disappointing and Howe will hope to turn it around here. Jonny remains the only reported injury concern for Wolves, and after ringing the changes last weekend, trying to predict the Wolves line up is quite difficult this week. Jimenez and Moutinho would hope to return. Bournemouth's main man Callum Wilson is still expected to miss out with the hamstring injury that meant he missed last weekend. Gosling remains a doubt for the away side. Prediction WOL2-2 BOU

Fulham v West Ham United

The evening kicks off sees the Hammers cross London to face Fulham at Craven Cottage. The home side have not saw the usual new managers bounce from the Ranieri appointment as they have slumped to 3 defeats in his 4 games in charge and were soundly beaten by off form Man Utd last weekend. By contrast, West Ham have found their groove in recent weeks. The Hammers have won their last three and have scored three goals in each of their last three matches. Anguish is suspended for Fulham after his red card but Chambers, who missed out against United, was pictured back in training and should be okay to feature here. For the visitors, Pellegrini has confirmed Wilshere will miss out for once again this weekend, though a decision on Lucas Perez's availability will be made at the last possible moment. Should Perez fail to recover from injury in time, Carroll could make his first Premier League start of the season. Prediction FUL 1-2 WHU

Brighton & Hove Albion v Chelsea

At The Amex, Chris Hughton and his men see the visit of a Chelsea side fresh from a ding dong Europa League game and on the back of their 2-0 win over City last weekend. Brighton are strong at home having lost just once and winning four of seven at the Amex in the league this season. Duffy is suspended for the home side and that should see Balogun continue alongside Dunk. Jahanbakhsh has returned to training so will be considered from the bench. Izquierdo will play if he comes through a fitness test. Brighton will be hoping to capitalise on any tired legs in the Blues ranks, as they had a tough trip to Hungary in Europe and picked up a few knocks in the process. Chelsea have lost back-to-back away league games, but did revitalise the title race with their win over City. Morata was injured on Europa League duty, and looks to be out of this one along with Moses and Cahill. Giroud should play up top. Kovacic is a doubt but his place in midfield could be fill by Loftus Cheek or Barkley. Prediction BHA 1-2 CHE

Southampton v Arsenal

The Saints go marching on with Super Sunday as they welcome the resurgent Arsenal to St Marys. The home side is up against it after losing 1-0 to Cardiff last weekend in Ralph Hasenhuttl's first game in charge. Saints have only won one Premier League game this season and are winless in their last 12 top-flight matches. They have doubts over Long and Ings who are big misses for a team lacking in goals, and could be without both 1st choice fullback in Bertrand and Cedric. They will hope Armstrong continues his recent good form. In the other dugout, Emery has guided his men to a run of 22 games without defeat in all competitions and are safely through to the knockout stages of the Europa League. The talented frontline seems to be clicking and Lacazette scored again in the Europa win over Qarabag. They do face a defensive crisis with Sokratis and Mustafi Suspended and Holding injured. Expect to see Monreal and Koscielny at the back, the French man having made his comeback in the Europa League. Ozil and Ramsey are also fit and should be part of the matchday squad. Prediction SOU 0-2 ARS

Liverpool v Manchester United

The big one finishes off the weekend at Anfield as English footballs 2 biggest sides meet in what is always a hotly anticipated match no matter how the 2 sides are performing. The form book shows a Liverpool side riding high on the top of the league, scoring goals and looking like genuine title contenders. On the other hand, Man Utd look the polar opposite despite their big win vs Fulham last week. Klopp's side will be full of confidence after booking their name in the knockout phase of the Champions League in midweek and deposing Man City as league leaders all in the past week. Liverpool haven't won a Premier League game at home to United since September 2013 but starts as firm favourites here. In booking that last 16 place, they have injuries to contend with. Matip is now out for six weeks and Alexander-Arnold is a huge doubt for Sunday. Keita and Fabinho did not feature in midweek, but may come back into contention here. United are unbeaten in their last five matches against Liverpool, though four have been draws but they are not in good form and they head to Anfield 16 points behind Liverpool. Jose confirmed after Valencia that Rashford, Lingard and Young, who all came off the bench on Wednesday, will start at Anfield. The jury remains out on Pogba and his lacklustre show in midweek will not have done his chances of a start here any good. Prediction LIV2-1 MNU Another week of intrigue and interest, but a lot of decisions to make on FPL selection ahead.
