Fantasy MLS Tips Mondogoal Daily Fantasy Football Advice Round 23 August 8, 2015
For the purposes of this article, all prices and points are via our partners Mondogoal.
And we're back! After a brief hiatus to upgrade the systems, Mondogoal has returned and provided us with another opportunity to prove ourselves in daily fantasy competition. And even though another league is taking all of the attention tomorrow (*ahem*) there are still guaranteed money leagues available to keep the good times rolling into the evening hours. If nothing else, use the debut of the Premier League games to your advantage -- study up a bit here and claim some MLS winnings while everybody else is looking the other way.
Here are the games on tap for Saturday:
Toronto v. SKC
Orlando v. Philadelphia
Montreal v. DC
Colorado v. Columbus
Houston v. San Jose
Vancouver v. RSL
Now, let's get into what you'll need to know to gain the edge over the competition:
#1) GOALKEEPER AND DEFENDER TIPS
The first rule in picking defenses is to look for home teams, right? Unfortunately, there are a few home teams this week that won't merit a ton of serious consideration. And the really good home teams are going to face a bit of a challenge. The only exception to this may be Montreal. Montreal are playing at home against DC, and DC haven't had the best time on the road lately. DC, though prolific at home, have only scored two goals in their last five road matches - and they've suffered three shutouts during that stretch.
For this reason, look to
Evan Bush ($6.0) as your main keeper out of Montreal. Bush and company will have a harder time with
Laurent Ciman being suspended for a red card, but they'll have a capable core of defenders to cover in his absence. If you're looking for a defensive pair for Bush, try
Amboise Oyongo ($7.5, D); the Impact defender is averaging 7.7 points per game over his last three matches at home.
Outside of Montreal,
David Ousted ($8.0) is a quality keeper whose last three matches have him averaging 6.8 points per match. The problem with Vancouver is that RSL are coming into town, and RSL are always a threat to score. Ousted may be worth picking up just to have a defensive pair with the resurgent
Pa Modou Kah ($6.0, D). Kah had himself a pair of goals last game and really attacked the ball off of set pieces. His total of 21.37 points was the biggest surprise of the weekend. Even though such scores may be rare, it's always a good idea to play the hot hand.
For a real value play, you could try Orlando's
Tally Hall ($4.4). Even though Hall's numbers have been terrible, Philadelphia aren't a strong team on the road. And, to be fair, Philly do find a way to get at least a goal in their away games, but at least you could still get the points for the chance that Hall only allows that single goal. Just be warned that playing Hall is essentially playing the fixture over the form - but for the price, it may not be the worst idea. As a defensive pair to Hall, go with
Corey Ashe ($5.8, D). Ashe is a bright spot on the Orlando back line and has scored tallies of 13.77 and 7.83 points in his last two games at home.
#2) MIDFIELDER TIPS
RSL's
Javier Morales ($15.5, M) is a player that's always looking to break your bank. But at the moment, the attacking midfielder seems to be fixture-proof. His last five matches have him scoring at an astounding 16.1 points per game average. Even though the trip to Canada isn't an easy one, his form suggests that he may well be worth the gamble.
The better value, and probably better fixture, belongs to
Benny Feilhaber ($12.8, M). The SKC man is the focal point of everything that his team does on both ends of the ball. And the real treat for Feilhaber this week is that he goes to Toronto, a team with a horrible defense. Toronto have conceded a total of 12 goals over their last five matches, and a clean sheet doesn't look to be anywhere in the cards for the Canadian side. SKC are good enough to exploit this critical weakness from the Toronto side. Either way, there are going to be goal tallies in this game.
Finally,
Pedro Morales ($10.7, M) has finally made his way back into the Vancouver rotation, and the dynamic midfielder looks to be ready for his normal minutes again after coming in as a sub in the previous game. In his limited minutes as a sub, Morales showed his old form and scored a quality goal. Bank on Morales being the big player that everybody forgot to include on their teams this week. He could be a great differential at a great price point.
#3) FORWARD TIPS
There is really only one 'must-have' player this weekend, and that player is
Sebastian Giovinco ($15.8, F). Even despite having the highest price tag of any player, he's also the player that's absolutely most deserving. In his last game against Orlando, Giovinco earned a penalty and scored a hat trick en route to 33.63 points. And those points aren't just a flash in the pan -- the striker leads the MLS in goals scored. Really, just assume that out of the $100,000,000 that Mondogoal allots players to use, only $84,200,000 will be available for all teams to use to build a squad, because all real players will be picking up Giovinco. He's not going to be a differential player for you, he's going to be the player you have to have to keep pace with everybody else.
Next up, consider
Octavio Rivero ($8.8, F) as a great option at home. Like most teams, Vancouver are also much better when playing in their own stadium. And Rivero seems to be of that ilk. Rivero's last score at home was 15.37 points, and this time around he'll have the added benefit of Morales absorbing some of the attention that's been thrown his way defensively. Adding Morales back into the mix is going to open up the opportunities for Rivero again, and he should start to bounce back to those high scoring levels we saw at the beginning of the year.
#4) BUDGET PLAYERS
I'll keep saying this, but
Cyle Larin ($8.4, F) at home is the ultimate budget play -- but with his rise in price, this is the last week we'll probably get to call him a budget player. Larin had a blank on the road in Toronto earlier in the week, but we aren't as concerned with his road performance. Right now, we have to look at the fact that Orlando will be playing at home with Kaka healthy once again. And that combination of factors is what we're looking for. Larin's two previous scores were 24.07 and 26.22, so he's well worth the price to have on your team.
Dominic Oduro ($7.0, M) for Montreal has been a real sleeper pick. You wouldn't expect big things from a player of that price, but his three previous tallies at home have been 13.75, 9.28 and 19.85. Really, he's a player who, like Larin, will continue to see his price rise if he continues these types of performances. The addition of Didier Drogba isn't likely to hinder him quite yet, and he's usually the fastest player on the pitch no matter who he is playing against. Also, given that Jack McInerney has now been shipped to Columbus, there's little worry that Oduro will find himself the victim of a forward rotation.
Finally,
Ricardo Clark ($6.9, M) from Houston has had some great scores in stretches that deserve a second look. You wouldn't know it by looking at him, but Clark's average points per game over his last five matches is a robust 8.9 points. The problem with Clark is that he can be a bit hit or miss. He scored 20 points in one game and 4.8 in another. Given his form and the fact that Houston play at home this week, I'd look for Clark to try to come close to hitting that average once again. He's worth the gamble for the price.
