I'm just going to throw this out there...but we kind of nailed it this week. And truthfully, I was a bit nervous with the conditions of the games at hand. So many missing superstars, a reduced schedule and injury toss-ups had me wringing my hands a bit. But in the end, good sense won the day and if you followed the advice on this site, you probably did OK for yourself. Check our predictions below if you like, but we'll go over them here in this column as well.
What we got wrong:
We had two picks for clean sheets, one panned out and one didn't. Our pick of David Bingham was surprisingly upset by a short-staffed Philadelphia team. Somebody finally gave the San Jose team a bit of a taste of their own medicine. For weeks now, San Jose have given us upset after upset, but their run suddenly came to a halt when they were the projected favorites at home. Losing to Philadelphia by the score of 2-1 wasn't a huge defeat, but it definitely upset the plans. The good news is that Bingham was the most expensive keeper on the board, so many people went with our second, and considerably cheaper, pick. But more on that later.
In keeping with San Jose, our number two pick for midfielders, Shea Salinas, was also a bit of a bust. Is it fair to call him a bust? Maybe it's better to say he was a slight disappointment. Salinas came in with 4.15 points and just had an average day. He was active enough (2 FW and 27 PC), but he didn't challenge the keeper at all, and I think he left a few points on the table in that game.
Finally, in our pick of the San Jose forwards, I called it a bit of a coin-flip based on how much you wanted to spend on that position. Here's what I had to say about picking between them, "...one of these guys is going to score this weekend — in fact, both of them might score. The hard part is predicting which man will take front and center because they share the wealth so well..." As it turns out, the prediction came through. Wondo did score and Quincy didn't. If you chose the value option then you got 2.11 points. I should have been more bold and just recommended Wondo, but Quincy should have done better. Simple as that.
What we got right:
Like I said above, the cheaper option at GK was what really paid off for us. Bobby Shuttleworth was able to keep a complete shutout against a toothless Orlando side this week. Could he replicate those results if Orlando is at full strength? It's hard to say. But because we play daily fantasy, we don't really have to worry ourselves over such things. The truth is, given these conditions, he was a top play for this weekend. And his price of $5.90? It was an unbeatable bargain. Shuttleworth gave his owners 11.8 points -- and our pairing-pick of Andrew Farrell returned 10.63 points.
Next, we made our number one pick in the midfield Lee Nguyen. Nguyen was a hefty $14.40 to buy, but he outscored his price once again. Nguyen gave 2A, 54PC and a clean sheet en route to providing 15.00 points to the owners that weren't scared off by his price. Expect another price bump for the New England midfielder this week -- he's earned it.
Our number one pick for forward this week was Obafemi Martins, and he turned in a tidy 18.52 points for owners. Martins playing at home, now paired again with Clint Dempsey, was just what the star striker needed. He had 4SOT and 1G, and it was all roses after that.
And finally, we told you to watch the lineups prior to making your final locks, because Didier Drogba was set to play at some point in the coming days. Well not only did he play, he scored a hat trick. It was an amazing thing to watch. You never quite know how a big named superstar is going to play in his first real start for the league, but his talent was too much. He was simply a man apart this weekend. And since his price started at $5.7, he'll only incrementally increase. Drogba should be the bargain man for the rest of the year. He has the ability to be a solid pick each and every round.
Our Grade: A-
We didn't blank on too many things this weekend. Outside of San Jose, most of what we pegged came to fruition. I used my own advice in a GPP tournament and scored 103 points to win the league. I'm also pretty proud of the fact that we didn't recommend any Columbus players, despite the fact that Columbus were at home. Something didn't feel right about that game with Kamara being out, and that omission puts us above the B+ category. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
