Gameweek 3 Captain Tips

Share post on:
By FPLHolly FPL Holly is back this week with her selection of captain picks for Gameweek 3. It could be yet another week with a difficult decision to be made! The Clueless Husband is already tired of the season, after FPL clouding a weekend away. There were captaincy successes all over last weekend, as we managed a clean sweep of returns for our selections. The Top 3 all returned a strong points return, with Salah taking 30% of all armbands, followed by Aguero at 18% and Kane just behind. The Sword vs Shield debate raged for most of the week, culminating in “Guardian Gate” on Friday evening, where the rumour mill went wild for a potential Aguero benching. We ourselves wavered on switching the armband to Salah, but stubbornness prevailed. Salah owners were relieved to only lose out on 11 points by playing safe. It's not going to get any easier for FPL managers though, with the same two dominating captaincy thoughts for Gameweek 3. Pep's positive comments on Aguero's form following Sunday's games should do plenty to alleviate any benching headaches, which should hopefully simplify matters.

Shield Pick: Mohammed Salah vs Brighton (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 4/9 With his 55% ownership, Salah will be the most captained again going into Gameweek 3, so makes an ideal safe pick once more. A home fixture against a Brighton side that struggle on the road is tempting. Liverpool won this game 4-0 last season, with Salah getting a goal and an assist, back in Gameweek 38. The Brighton defence have been far from resolute so far, conceding two goals apiece in their opening two games. In terms of the great Shield vs Sword debate, Salah edges it for me this week given the home fixture. Will you be cautious and opt for the shield pick?

Sword Pick: Sergio Aguero vs Wolves (A)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 4/7 Aguero faces a game against one of the promoted teams, fresh off the back of a hat trick last weekend: what more could you want? This game could go either way, with Wolves likely to bring the game to the Champions: they've conceded 2 goals in each of their last 2 games, but will be more than up for the challenge. Aguero may be on penalties and his starting berth looks secure after Pep's comments last weekend. The away fixture and unpredictability of the opposition are the sticking points for me. Will you gamble on the sword pick?

Form Pick: Sadio Mane vs Brighton (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: Evens Mane is currently leading the FPL points chart, after amassing two double digit returns in the opening games. He has been a little fortunate, with two goals in injury time and one which should have been ruled offside. If you don't own Salah or fancy taking a risk, but like the fixture, Sadio Mane could provide a useful alternative. Brighton may struggle, if Dunk is ruled out with the injury which forced him off against Manchester United. Managers were disappointed when Milner took the penalty against Crystal Palace, but he may reclaim spot kick duties if Henderson comes back into the XI as predicted. Are you going with the form pick?

Fixture Pick: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang vs West Ham (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 8/13 Aubameyang has yet to perform this season, but is well fancied ahead of this strong fixture. As an owner since Gameweek 1, he's on his last chance this weekend, but if you've stuck with him this long, I'd encourage you to give him a chance here. He's got a home fixture against a team that have conceded 6 goals across their opening 2 games, including 4 away to Liverpool. Aubameyang was far more consistent against weaker opposition last season, with his statistics boosted at home. He may be on penalties for Arsenal too. Are you chasing points in this favourable fixture?

Punt Pick: Henrikh Mkhitaryan vs West Ham (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 13/10 Another strong option for the Arsenal game, is Mkhitaryan. He was pivotal for getting Arsenal back in the game against Chelsea last weekend, proving that Arsenal still have plenty of attacking potential. A goal and an assist contributed to his 12 point total, and it could have been more if his team mates had been more consistent in front of goal. In 4 appearances against West Ham, Mkhitaryan has contributed 4 assists. Will you take the punt?

Park the Bus Pick: Andrew Robertson vs Brighton (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 10/1 Clean Sheet Odds: 7/10 Back-to-back clean sheets for Liverpool, plus a fixture against a Brighton side who are goal-shy on the road, make for a plausible defensive option. Last season, Robertson got a goal, assist and clean sheet in this fixture. He looks to be the best option from the Liverpool back line, given his attacking prowess and ability to gather up bonus points. With the Liverpool defence looking surprisingly solid, are you brave enough to captain a defender?

Clueless Husband Pick: Sergio Aguero vs Wolves (A)

It's a confident selection for the Clueless Husband this week, who will need to use 2 free transfers and potentially a -4 to get Aguero in his side. He got annoyed plenty of times last weekend, when I spent most of our weekend away fretting and then cheering my captain choice of Aguero. It turns out that it's stuck in his mind, so he's going bold on the Sword Pick this week. Will you side with my Clueless Husband? Until Next Week… Good Luck!
