Gameweek 20 Captain Picks

Share post on:
FPL Holly is back this week with her selection of captain picks for Gameweek 20. Managers will be hoping that the latest round of festive fixtures are as kind as the previous, with minimal rotation and goals galore. Gameweek 19 was a great one for captaincy, with the top 3 choices of Kane, Salah and Aubameyang all performing. There's a wide array of options available again this time around, but fatigue and rotation could set in.

Shield Pick: Mohammed Salah vs Arsenal (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 3/4 Salah has the highest ownership of all attacking players in the game, so should be the most captained once again, despite the fixture looking a little tougher on paper. With Milner potentially still sidelined with injury, Salah will be looking to earn and convert penalties once more. He has 5 goals and 2 assists in his last 4 games, playing 90 minutes in each of them. With Liverpool gaining an advantage at the top of the Premier League, and having plenty of rest time, it's unlikely that Klopp will rotate his star striker. Salah now has 3 double digit returns in his last 4 games, helping himself to bonus points on each of those occasions. He has the added edge of playing out of position as a striker too. Arsenal are without a clean sheet in their last 3 games, conceding 2+ goals to top six sides on each occasion this season. The only downside to a Salah captain choice is that he hasn't scored or assisted against the traditional top six sides this season. Will you play safe with the shield pick?

Sword Pick: Harry Kane vs Wolves (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 13/20 Kane is another good contender for captaincy this weekend, with 3 goals and 2 assists in his last 3 starts. His rests in recent weeks and early substitution on Boxing Day suggest that he will start in this one and he's on penalties which further strengthens his appeal. The last time Kane blanked when starting a Premier League game, was all the way back in Gameweek 10. Wolves have just one clean sheet in their last 10 games and will struggle to keep out the potent Spurs attack at Wembley. Are you going to take a risk on the sword pick?

Form Pick: Heung-Min Son vs Wolves (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 11/8 Son's return to form mean he cannot be ignored, with 6 goals and 3 assists in his last 4 starts. He is a player who may be due a rest, but Poch will be losing him to the Asian Games in a few weeks so doesn't necessarily need to concentrate on his long-term fitness. He's managed to outscore Kane in most of his recent appearances and could arguably be a better captaincy contender than his teammate on this occasion. Will you opt for the sword pick?

Fixture Pick: Paul Pogba vs Bournemouth (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 7/5 Pogba has been unstoppable since the departure of Mourinho from Old Trafford and is now central to a United attack creating and converting plenty of chances. He has 2 goals and 3 assists from his last 2 games, with double digit returns in each. A home game against Bournemouth comes at a good time, the Cherries have recently conceded 4 to Liverpool, 3 to City and 5 to Spurs. After spending plenty of weeks warming the United bench, he should still be reasonably fresh and ready to play despite the congested schedule. Are you going with the fixture pick?

Punt Pick: Sergio Aguero vs Southampton (A)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 8/11 Manchester City may have lost 3 of their last 4 games, but that rut cannot last forever. An away game to Southampton will be the perfect opportunity for them to bounce back and put the pressure on Liverpool and Spurs. Aguero's return to the side is much needed, with a crucial assist last time out. He got a goal and 2 assists the last time he faced Southampton, plus he has penalties too. Will you take a punt on the resurgent City man?

Reverse Pick: Raheem Sterling vs Southampton (A)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 11/10 For the first time this season, the reverse pick joins the choices. Gameweek 20 sees the reverse of the Gameweek 11 fixtures, the same sides line up but with the fixtures reversed in location from home to away and vice versa. Sterling was the star man back when Southampton visited the Etihad, amassing 21 points from 2 goals and 2 assists in a 6-1 thrashing. City will be hoping for a similar result here, with Sterling a viable source of points for another big win. Should you be holding an out of form Sterling and considering him a captain option?

Park the Bus Pick: Kieran Trippier vs Wolves (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 7/1 Clean Sheet Odds: 10/11 Despite a fantastic performance by Kyle Walker-Peters on Boxing Day, I'd imagine Trippier will. reclaim the right back slot in this game and deliver FPL points. Spurs now have 3 clean sheets from their last 4 games, and Trippier has 1 goal and 5 assists this season, including an assist in the reverse fixture. Can he deliver attacking and defensive returns this week?

Clueless Husband Pick: Eden Hazard vs Crystal Palace (A)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 5/4 The lazy approach has paid dividends for my Clueless Husband in recent weeks, with Hazard contributing a mammoth 30 points as captain last weekend. He's holding firm on the Chelsea striker once more this weekend: he has 3 goals and 3 assists from his last 3 games. Penalties and playing as a striker in recent games further boosts his appeal. It remains to be seen whether he can start yet another game, after being hampered by injury last month. Will you side with my Clueless Husband? Until Next Week… Good Luck!
