Gameweek 19 Captain Picks

Share post on:
FPL Holly is back this week with her selection of captain picks for Gameweek 19. It's a challenging time, with some big results expected on Boxing Day and rotation imminent. Gameweek 18 was a tough one with mixed results on captaincy: Aubameyang, Salah and Kane all delivered but Sane, Sterling and Hazard disappointed many. At least they all started and saw significant minutes, but there's no guarantees of the same again in Gameweek 19, so choose wisely.

Shield Pick: Mo Salah vs Newcastle (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 1/2 Salah is in great form, with 4 goals and 2 assists in his last 4 games. A favourable home fixture against Newcastle beckons, with Salah easily clearing the floor with non-top six opposition this season. Liverpool have had decent rest time so rotation could be minimised with the home fixture, and Klopp may not afford to rest his top player, but Arsenal and Manchester City fixtures are looming. If Milner doesn't play, then Salah will be on penalties too. This fixture ended 2-0 last season, with Salah contributing a goal. He is playing prominently out of position as the main striker. With his ownership increasing towards 40%, he's likely to be the most captained this week. However, Newcastle have back to back clean sheets and tend to keep things tight on the road. Will you play safe with the shield pick?

Sword Pick: Harry Kane vs Bournemouth (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 8/15 Harry Kane always performs well over the festive period, with many managers benefiting from his 15 point haul against Everton. He's had a few rests recently so should start this one, he has 4 goals and 3 assists from his last 4 Premier League starts. He is on penalties and is benefiting from the Spurs midfield being back on form. He has slightly lower ownership than Salah so may not be as popular an option. Many managers will have fond memories of Kane's Boxing Day goals, including a hat trick last season. Bournemouth are struggling defensively recently, shipping 2+ goals against traditional top six sides this season. Kane has 6 goals in 5 starts against Bournemouth. Are you going with the sword pick?

Form Pick: Heung-Min Son vs Bournemouth (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 11/8 Son has exploded in recent weeks, with 4 goals and 3 assists from his last 4 starts. He is due a rest so the captaincy is risky here, but he has the ability to run rings around this Bournemouth defence. Expect Spurs to have plenty of possession here. Son has 3 goals in 4 starts against the Cherries. An early substitution for Son in the Everton game, after a 21 point haul, suggests that Poch may have protected him with this fixture in mind. Will you opt for the form pick?

Fixture Pick: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang vs Brighton (A)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: Evens Aubameyang has 2 goals and 1 assist in his last 4 Premier League starts, plus penalties too. Brighton are without a clean sheet in their last 9 games, conceding 2 goals to top six sides this season. Arsenal will be high on confidence in this game after leading at half time in their last fixture. Aubameyang has had a string of starts of late so carries a significant rotation risk, particularly with an away fixture. He got a goal in this fixture last season. Are you going with the fixture pick?

Punt Pick: Jesse Lingard vs Huddersfield (H)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 17/10 Manchester Untied are revitalised under Soljskaer and Lingard looks the pick of the attacking options given his form and penalty duties. He now had 4 consecutive starts, with 4 goals and 1 assist in that time. A home game against Huddersfield should yield points: they've conceded 7 goals in their last 4 games. Will you be punting on the United train?

Park the Bus Pick: Matt Doherty vs Fulham (A)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 4-1 Clean Sheet Odds: 15/8 Doherty remains incredibly attacking in the wing back position, and was unlucky not to deliver an attacking return against Liverpool last gameweek. A clean sheet looks likely against a Fulham side who have failed to score in their last two games. Attacking returns are also likely, given Doherty has 3 goals and 3 assists this season. Defenders tend to see less rotation, with the Wolves lineup staying reasonably consistent through the season. Are you brave enough to captain a defender?

Clueless Husband Pick: Eden Hazard vs Watford (A)

Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 21/20 The Clueless Husband has been neglecting his team this season, with his dead team sporting a Hazard captain for a number of weeks. He get's the nod officially this time, with 1 goal and 4 assists in his last 4 starts. His away form is equally as good as at Stamford Bridge, plus he's playing out of position as a striker. His minutes were managed in the EFL Cup last week, so a start looks hopeful here for Chelsea's main man. Watford have struggled against top six sides this season.
