Holly Shand from Fantasy Football Community returns with captaincy corner and her three player picks in three positions for Gameweek 14.
Captaincy fortunes were varied in Gameweek 13. There were big points for those who went with Vardy, who boarded the penalty re-take rollercoaster on Saturday afternoon. There was a lot less luck for those who went with Sterling, who had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside on Saturday evening. Salah didn't show up and Mane delivered an attacking return once more. Aubameyang writes his way back into the conversation with an assist, while Mourinho brings the new manager bounce.
Fixture congestion is here! Seven teams are involved in European games prior to Gameweek 14 and then be aware that Gameweek 15 is a round of midweek games coming up immediately, with the deadline next Tuesday evening - do not miss it. This week the captaincy could be very tight, and events in Europe before these games, including minutes and injuries, could help to separate the main players in the frame for our Gameweek 14 armband.
Captaincy Corner
The shield pick is likely to be the most captained player of the week, allowing you to play safe and keep pace with the pack. The sword pick will be a less popular selection: if they perform it can shoot you up the overall rankings, but the risk from failure is higher.
Shield Pick: Jamie Vardy vs Everton (H)
Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 3/4
Jamie Vardy has been in sensational form, so deservedly leads the captaincy debate. It's now five consecutive returns for the Foxes striker, amassing seven goals and three assists in that spell. The underlying statistics are becoming more prevalent now too: he's 1st for big chances with 10 and 2nd for shots in the box among all players over the last four games. Notably, he's also got penalties in his locker which can boost his score too. Vardy loves playing against Everton: he has five goals and three assists from eight Premier League games. European Cup involvement doesn't have to come into the conversation with Vardy too, which is another tick for him. Everton are without a clean sheet in their last four games, with seven goals conceded during that spell. Most notably, they've failed to keep Southampton or Norwich out in their most recent pair of games. Conceding two goals to Norwich on home turf, who are a team who had one goal on the road to that point, demonstrates the key issues in the Toffees defence. All the signs are pointing in the right direction to another successful Vardy captain. Will you play safe with the Shield Pick?
Sword Pick: Sadio Mane vs Brighton (H)
Anytime Goalscorer Odds: 5/6
Sadio Mane looks like he can run Vardy close in the big captain race this week, with a home game against Brighton. His form is also very good, with three goals and two assists over his last four games. That can't match Vardy's output, but aside from his high levels, these returns are excellent and his goal conversion rate is high right now, which demonstrates his confidence. The fixture is great on paper, with Brighton conceding seven goals in four games. Worryingly, Mane has never scored or assisted against the Seagulls. Check his minutes and the fitness of Salah during this week's Champions League game against Napoli before committing your armband here. Are you going to take a risk in selecting the Sword Pick?
Holly's Hopefuls
I share my top three players for each Gameweek, selecting one defender, one midfielder and one striker. These are players that I'm tipping for the FPL Dream Team and they could also make intriguing differential captain decisions for you to consider too.
DEF: Andrew Robertson vs Brighton (H)
Robertson looks like a great option this week, with the hope of attacking returns, clean sheet and bonus points too. He's outshone his team-mate over the last few games, notching up one goal and two assists in his last three games. It's been a barren spell as far as clean sheets have been concerned for Liverpool, with none since Alisson returned to the side five weeks ago. Surely they'll brush up on conceding a goal per game very soon? Robertson has one goal, one assist and three clean sheets against Brighton in four games!
MID: Son Heung-Min vs Bournemouth (H)
Son could be a fantastic differential this weekend, as Mourinho's new manager bounce continues. He looks to be an important man in Jose's side, having delivered 13 points against West Ham last weekend with a goal, assist and three bonus points. Son's form was there anyway, with two goals and four assists from his last four games. Bournemouth aren't performing well from a defensive perspective either and Son has five goals in six games against the Cherries.
FOR: Tammy Abraham vs West Ham (H)
I'm hugely interested in giving Tammy Abraham the armband this weekend, particularly with the weaknesses in West Ham's defence right now - do not overlook him! West Ham have conceded three goals in each of their last three games and Abraham has two goal and two assists in his last four games. Tammy has had 10 shots in that spell too, plus he's created four chances. He's still second in the Golden Boot race with ten, just two behind Jamie Vardy.
Until next time…
Good luck!
