FPL Heisenberg's Captain Series
Welcome to the latest article in a new series for the 2020/21 Fantasy Premier League season from @FPL_Heisenberg for FPL Bet. In this weekly series, Heisenberg will be looking into the best captaincy options, as well as ‘outside of the box' captaincy choices for each Gameweek. Heisenberg has a proven track record in FPL, having finished inside the top 32k in each of the last 6 seasons, including a best finish of 836th. Let's cook!
Double Gameweek 27 Captains:
Raheem Sterling (Fixture: Man United, Home and Southampton, Home)
Raheem Sterling has gone a bit quiet in recent weeks, but with a double Gameweek in GW27 against Man United and Southampton.
He has 7 goals and 6 assists in his last 15 Premier League starts. Further to this, his underlying stats are also currently in terms of touches in the box and shots in the box for all midfielders, he's right up there.
There's always a chance of rotation with Pep Guardiola as we all know, however, I'm feeling relatively confident given the fact he was rested in the last match.
There's many other viable City options to choose from this week, like De Bruyne or Joao Cancelo… or fellow City midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan…
Ilkay Gundogan (Fixture: Man United, Home and Southampton, Home)
The German midfielder has transformed himself this season, from a holding or central midfielder, to one who's arriving into the box to get tap ins from 8 yards out! This upturn in attacking form from Gundogan has contributed massively to Man City's overall exemplary form, culminating in a 21 match winning streak!
I'm more confident that Gundogan will play both games in this Double following on from his rest in the last game, he should get a run of starts now.
There's some talk that Gundogan will be less attacking now De Bruyne is back, but I don't buy this, he's still getting into great positions and I fully expect him to be getting some attacking returns in these matches.
Will Man City be able to kick on further? For those captaining one of their assets, they'll sure hope that is the case.
Harry Kane (Fixture: Crystal Palace, Home)
Harry Kane has been a goal threat for many years in the Premier League, but his assist threat is something he's added to his game.
His passing ability has always been exceptional, but tactically he was more the man to get on the end of passes, now he's dropping into the number 10 position at times to feed the lightning quick lethal finisher Heung-Min Son. The stats show how much better he's become creatively, only Grealish (12) and Bruno (12) have more assists than Kane (11) this season.
The good news for Kane is he's been fully rested in the last two Europa League games, meaning he isn't racking up unnecessary minutes leading to burnout or injury, so you'd assume he is nailed on for 90 minutes against Roy Hodgson's men.
If you don't have Kane in your FPL team then maybe you fancy putting the armband on his teammate, the South Korean international Son who's also a great choice this Gameweek and has also been used sparingly in recent Europa League games.
‘Outside of the Box' captains:
Joao Cancelo (Fixture: Man United, Home and Southampton, Home)
Another Man City asset who got a rest in recently, making it much more likely that he'll start both games of the double. The creative Man City defender is only selected by under 26% of FPL players at the time of writing, and will be a huge captain differential, with your mini-league rivals likely to captain one of the midfield or forward options.
The Portuguese has been performing very well recently, getting plenty of shots away and performing well creatively too.
He's part of a team that has the best defence in the league, so the chances of a clean sheet are high, especially as they are playing a Man United side who struggle against the top 6 teams and a struggling Southampton side. A clean sheet plus an attacking return (which is a very realistic scenario) would almost certainly guarantee a double-digit haul from Cancelo.
Danny Ings (Fixture: Sheffield United, Away and Man City, Away)
The Southampton talisman is currently selected by under 10.5% of FPL players at the time of writing, and he will be a huge captain differential, with your mini-league rivals likely to captain one of the Man City assets.
The Saints number 9 will be looking to get back in the goals against bottom of the table Sheffield United. Their second fixture is tough of course, so see it like this, you'll have whatever Danny Ings can score vs Sheffield United plus 2 points on top from the second game vs Man City who have been solid defensively.
It's also worth remembering that Ings is Southampton's penalty taker, giving him that extra route to potential points which is always nice for your FPL captain.
