Share post on:
Welcome to this week's Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 23 fixture preview. In this article, Will Godley provides us with an in-depth fixture-by-fixture breakdown of this weekends fixtures. This week-end sees Arsenal take on Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday, in the stand-out game. Having suffered many a times at the hands of their London rivals in recent years, the Gunners will be looking to take advantage of the Blues' vulnerable state of present. Meanwhile, Leicester take on Stoke City at the King Power Stadium, as they look to maintain their title challenge. As things stand, they and Arsenal sit level on points - with Man City and Spurs trailing in 3rd and 4th. City travel to Upton Park to face West Ham, whilst Spurs face a trip to Selhurst Park, to take on Alan Pardew's goal shy side. Elsewhere, Sunderland host Bournemouth in a crucial game at the other end of the division, and Aston Villa must win at the home of their Midlands rivals, West Brom. Champions League chasing Manchester United and Liverpool, take on Southampton and Norwich City, respectively.

SATURDAY

Norwich vs Liverpool (12:45 KO)

Liverpool have won 9 and lost none of their last 11 Premier League fixtures against The Canaries. Norwich though, are unbeaten in their last 5 matches at Carrow Road. Alex Neil's side have the same record after 22 matches, as they did during their last Premier League campaign in 2013/14 - W6, D5, L11 and 23 points. Liverpool like to play Norwich, having scored 22 goals in their last 6 league matches against Norwich, although 12 of those came from a certain Luis Suarez. Gary O'Neil is suspended for the game but is Alex Neil's only absentee for this weekends early kick off. There cold be a debut for Steven Naismith after his move earlier this week from Everton, the Scot is expected toe lead the line. For Liverpool Jon Flanaghan is available for selection after making a return to competitive action on Wednesday night whilst Dejan Lovren will face a late test but is expected to miss it.

Sunderland vs Bournemouth (15:00 KO)

These two have only ever met 7 times in all competitions, with Sunderland having lost on only 1 occasion, but that came earlier this season. The Black Cats have won 3 of their 6 league home matches, since the appointment of Sam Allardyce. Whilst star striker, Jermain Defoe, has scored more goals in 2016 (5) than any other player in the Premier League. Adam Johnson has the most assists (4). We could well see a penalty in this game, Sunderland have conceded the most penalties in the Premier League this season with seven whilst. Since the start of 2014-15, Bournemouth have won more penalties than any other team in the top four tiers of English football with 20. Bournemouth have won just 1 of their last 5 away league matches. For the home side, Younes Kaboul is close to a return to fitness, but is expected to miss the tie with Bournemouth leaving Wes Brown and John O'Shea the partnership. Jordan Pickford is expected to retain his place in between the sticks. Benik Afobe was forced off against Norwich with an injury meaning Glenn Murray may lead the attack, we could also see Juan Iturbe start on the bench once again.

Watford vs Newcastle United (15:00 KO)

Watford have beaten Newcastle twice already this season - in the league and FA Cup 3rd round. The Magpies have scored just 6 goals in their last 16 league away matches. Whilst Watford's Odion Ighalo has scored 6 goals in his last 6 league appearances at Vicarage Road. Newcastle's star man, Georginio Wijnaldum has no goals and two assists in his 10 Premier League away appearances this season, compared to nine goals and one assist in 12 PL apps at St James' Park. Despite signing Costel Pantilimon earlier this week it's expected that Gomes will retain his place in goal with Watford's other new signing Moroccan Nordin Amrabat likely to start from the bench. For Newcastle Paul Dummett isn't likely to feature after coming off in the win over West Ham with a hamstring injury meaning Jack Colback could be dropped to left-back, this could mean Henri Saivet could make his full debut for the Magpies.

West Brom vs Aston Villa (15:00 KO)

Aston Villa will be looking to secure victory at the Hawthorns and continue their upward surge - having beaten Palace and drawn with Leicester, in their last 2 games. They have history on their side too, having only lost just 2 of their first 16 Premier League fixtures against the Baggies. Although they have lost  2 of the last 3. West Brom have failed to attempt a single shot at goal in 3 league fixtures this season. James Morrisson will miss the derby after a hamstring injury will leave him on the sidelines for six to eight weeks. West Brom will rely on a late fitness test for Darren Fletcher who was forced off with a knee injury last weekend. Aston Villa manager Remi Garde has a tough decision in defence, Okore and Lescott has been his best partnership but Ciaran Clark grabbed a goal midweek and Micah Richards is also back to fitness. Elsewhere there will be competition up front between Rudy Gestede and Libor Kozak, It may be Rickie Lambert who decides this game he has scored more Premier League goals against Aston Villa than versus any other opponent (4). Whilst referee Robert Madley has awarded 10 penalties in 15 Premier League games this season; the most in the competition.

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham (15:00 KO)

Palace have failed to score in 4 of their last 5 outings against Spurs, and have scored just 1 in their last 6 Premier League games. Spurs are clearly the form side going into this one and are unbeaten in their last 9 away games in the Premier League - winning 4. If the score is 0-0 at half-time, persevere with this one. There have been 17 goals scored in the last 9 meetings between Palace and Spurs - with all 17 being scored in the second half. Crystal Palace have lost all three of their Premier League games since the turn of 2016 and have a goal difference of -8 from these games having scored 0 goals and conceding 8. Spurs striker Harry Kane has attempted more shots on target than any other Premier League player in 2015-16 so far (38). Alan Pardew could name a similar side to the one that was outclassed 4-0 to Manchester City last weekend whilst Spurs may also remain unchanged from their 4-1 win over Sunderland despite Heung-min Son impressing during the midweek FA Cup win over Leicester City.

Leicester vs Stoke (15:00 KO)

Leicester have lost just 1 of their last 13 home matches in the league. Although Stoke have kept 5 clean sheets in their last 8 away games. Potters star man, Bojan, has opened the scoring in the last 2 league meetings between these 2. Meanwhile, Riyad Mahrez appears to be experiencing a dip in form, having not scored or a assisted a goal in his last 5 league matches, missing 2 penalties in the process. Bojan has opened the scoring in each of the last two Premier League meetings between the two sides and will be hoping to do so again as he is expected to play the number 10 role behind Joselu. The likes of Jamie Vardy, Mahrez, N'Golo Kante, Wes Mordan and Marc Albrighton were all rested in the midweek defeat to Tottenham and will be fresh for the visit of Stoke. Mark Hughes' side could be without Xhredan Shaqiri as the winger looks to overcome a hamstring problem. This could mean Stoke play the same team that drew 0-0 with Arsenal last weekend,

Manchester United vs Southampton (15:00 KO)

United have lost just 1 of their last 10 Premier League fixtures against the Saints, but that defeat came in the sides last meeting at Old Trafford. What's more, Graziano Pelle has scored 3 goals in 3 games against the Red Devils, since moving to the South-Coast. Talking of goal scorers, if Wayne Rooney manages 2 goals here, he will have accumulated 100 Premier League goals at Old Trafford. The United captain's winner at Anfield last Sunday, means that he has now scored 5 goals in his last 4 games. Manchester United have been strong at the back this season but they have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight Premier League games against Southampton. Louis van Gaal could reacall Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has missed the last two matches through injury. There are still doubts over the fitness of Phil Jones and Michael Carrick who both watched the 1-0 win over Liverpool from the stands. We could well see Juan Mata continue to sit on the bench, he has been given a reduced role in recent weeks and could be battling Jesse Lingard for a starting spot. Southampton have kept consecutive clean sheets for the first time since the start of November, this is coupled with the return Fraser Forster has started both of his matches. Matthew Targett has been a revelation in a more advanced position in the last two games, which could keep see Dusan Tadic start from the bench. New signing Charlie Austin trained all week and is fit to start but it's expected either Long or Pelle will get that call.

West Ham vs Manchester City (17:30 KO)

West Ham have won 2 of their last 3 games against Manuel Pellegrini's side. Before their victory at Watford, City had gone 6 away games without claiming all 3 points. Sergio Aguero has scored 4 goals and made 2 assists in his 7 leagues outings against the Hammers. Whilst 14 different players have scored for West Ham this season - only Chelsea (also 14) have had the same record. West Ham Slaven Bilic may continue to use the 4-3-3 system that was used in the defeat to Newcastle last time out, both Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll are still out injured. New signing Sam Byram is available to play but is unlikely to earn his debut from the start. Eliaquim Mangala, Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany are all out and could be joined in the injury room by Fernandinho and Aleksandar Kolarov. The latter was forced off on a stretcher in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace is expected to be replaced by Gael Clichy in the starting XI. Manuel Pellegrini has both his right backs, Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta available and will have to make a decision on who will start there.

SUNDAY

Everton vs Swansea (13:30 KO)

In the 21 times they have met in the league, the Toffees have never lost to the Swans - winning on 13 occasions. Swansea have managed just 4 goals in 9 Premier a League matches against Everton - failing to score in 6. Kevin Mirallas has scored 3 goals in his last 5 appearances, having netted just 1 in 15 before. Whilst Gareth Barry may be 34, but that hasn't stopped him from running further than any other player in the league this season (261.6km). With Coleman and Browning both injured, Bryan Oviedo was forced to play at right-back last weekend but he too picked up an injury and is a doubt. This could force John Stones to toplay right-back if the Costa Rican is not fit to play. Ramiro Funes Mori is inline to start having come on to score at Stamford Bridge. There will be a battle between Aaron Lennon and Gerard Deulofeu are vying for the starting berth on the right wing. For Swansea  Francesco Guidolin will be in the dugout for the first time following his appointment as head coach at the Welsh club. Belgian Kevin Mirallas has scored three goals in his last five appearances for the Toffees in all competitions after netting just once in his previous 15 for the club, whilst Everton have failed to score in three of the last four meetings with Swansea in all competitions.

Arsenal vs Chelsea (16:00 KO)

A victory keeps Arsenal at the top of the league, whilst Chelsea will be looking to do the double over Arsene Wenger's side, having controversially beaten them 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, earlier in the campaign. Despite their good form of late, Chelsea represent a mental obstacle for the Gunners. They haven't scored in their last 8 hours and 2 minutes of Premier League football against Chelsea, having not hit the back of the net in their last 5 league fixtures against the Blues. Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 8 top flight meetings against Arsenal but face a daunting task heading to the Emirates, to take on a side who haven't lost any of their last 9 games there. Diego Costa is a man in form, having scored 5 goals in 5 matches, since the second coming of Guus Hiddink. Alexis Sanchez is likely to be in the squad for the first time since his injury, though it remains to be seen if he will be thrown into action from the start and will probably start from the bench. Francis Coquelin is also back in training but is still likely to be a week or so away from a return. New signing Mohamed Elneny should be on the bench after Arsene Wenger may avoid making too many changes to his side following the draw with Stoke. Eden Hazard is back in full training and should return to the side at the expense of Pedro and Chelsea fans will be hopeful their striker Diego Costa is fit enough to start the game having had such a big impact on the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge. After a poor performance against Everton Nemanja Matic may lose his place in midfield with Fabregas moving further back and Oscar returning to the line-up.
