Welcome to this week's Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 22 fxiture preview. In this article,
Will Godley provides us with an in-depth fixture-by-fixture breakdown of this weekends fixtures.
In another pulsating week-end of Premier League action, there is much to play for at the top and bottom of the division. Table toppers Arsenal, face a tricky visit to Stoke
on Sunday, whilst Manchester City host Crystal Palace and Leicester travel to Villa Park for a Midlands Derby.
Sunderland will be looking to build
on Wednesday night's crucial 4-2 victory at Swansea, when they head to White Hart Lane, to take on high-flying Spurs. The before mentioned Swans, will be desperate to stop their slide, when they host Watford in the
Monday night football.
The game of the week-end though, is without a doubt
Sunday's heavyweight clash, between Liverpool and Manchester United. A red-hot atmosphere should await both teams at Anfield, in the latest edition of English football's biggest game. The opposing managers have both won the Bundesliga, and for Jurgen Klopp, this will be his first taste of the fixture.
SATURDAY
Tottenham vs Sunderland (12:45 KO)
On paper this game looks like an easy win for Spurs, they are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League matches vs Sunderland and have only lost two Premier League fixtures at White Hart Lane this season. Sunderland's away form raises some eyebrows though with the Black Cats conceding 30 goals away from home this season.
Jermain Defoe returns to his old club on a hot streak having scored five goals in his last two Premier League matches but it'll be Harry Kane who will be wanting to dominate the headlines, Spurs striker hasn't scored in his last three Premier League matches. Someone who does have good form against Sunderland is Christian Eriksen, the Dane has scored in all three of his league appearances against the North-East side. Sunderland are expected to name the same XI that beat Swansea City 4-2 on Wednesday.
Chelsea vs Everton (15:00 KO)
Just when you thought Chelsea had turned a corner following their 3-0 win over Crystal Palace they put in a poor performance and draw with West Brom, but it is important to note that Chelsea are unbeaten since the departure of Jose Mourinho. Chelsea are also unbeaten in their last 20 homes matches against Everton in the Premier League and will be hoping to extend that run this weekend, but Everton have lost just one of their 10 Premier League away games this season (W3 D6 L1).
For Everton they will be looking towards Ross Barkley for some creativity the midfielder has provided more assists than any other English player this season with seven. Guus Hiddink will be hopeful that Eden Hazard can make a return to full fitness the Belgian has missed Chelsea's last two competitive matches through injury. If you're a Pedro owner you may want to consider his selection after he was subbed off at half time against West Brom after another poor performance.
Manchester City vs Crystal Palace (15:00 KO)
Manchester City play hosts to Crystal Palace this weekend in an attempt to extend their unbeaten run to five games, City have won 9 of their last 10 games against Palace with midfield general Yaya Toure scoring in four of his last five matches against the Eagles in all competitions. Connor Wickham made a return from injury against Aston Villa, the striker has scored three goal in his last three Premier League appearances against Manchester City.
It could be Kevin De Bruyne's day against Palace, only Mesut Ozil has created more goalscoring chances in the Premier League this season than the Belgian. With Sergio Aguero hungry to find some goalscoring form the two could prove a nightmare to deal with for the Palace defence. Defenders Eliaquim Mangala, and Vincent Kompany as well as Samir Nasri will miss out, with Martin Demichelis and Nicolas Otamendi set to feature at the heart of the defence once more. Both Wilfried Bony and Fernandinho are both doubts for Pellegrini's side and are likely be assessed closer to kick off.
We could see the return of David Silva to the starting XI replacing Jesus Navas who started the 0-0 draw with Everton. Whilst in defence Aleksandar Kolarov could replace Gael Clichy. There is still no return for Palace duo Yannick Bolasie and Dwight Gayle who will miss the game through injury. In goal its possibly that Julian Speroni may replace Wayne Hennessey after his error at Villa Park.
Newcastle vs West Ham (15:00 KO)
Dimitri Payet made his return to the starting XI against Bournemouth and what an impact he had. The Frenchman scored a lovely free kick before assisting Enner Valencia. He really is a pleasure to watch and almost everything West Ham to good going forwards comes through Payet. It's likely that Nikica Jelavić will start upfront after Andy Carroll sustained a hamstring injury against Bournemouth, he joins Diafra Sakho and Manuel Lanzini in the Hammers treatment room.
It's been a season to forget for Newcastle fans they are winless in five Premier League fixtures (D2 L3), their longest run since failing to win any of their opening eight fixtures this season. Their shining light this season has been Georginio Wijnaldum, all of his eight goals have been scored at St James Park. Jonjo Shelvey could make his Newcastle debut, though it's likely that Henri Saivet will start from the bench.
Bournemouth vs Norwich City (15:00 KO)
Norwich City are unbeaten in their last six fixtures against the Cherries in all competitions but they are the only Premier League team yet to keep a clean sheet away from home this season. That makes for good news for Benik Afobe who is expected to lead the line for Bournemouth, whilst Lewis Grabban could make his debut against the club he has just left. Another new signing in the shape of Juan Iturbe could make his first start for Bournemouth replacing Matt Ritchie, who was forced off in their defeat to West Ham on Tuesday with a dead leg.
Bournemouth can also welcome Simon Francis back from suspension, but Joshua King remains a doubt. Gary O'Neil is the only player unavailable for Alex Neil for the trip to Bournemouth. O'Neil will begin the first of his three-match suspension following his straight red card in the 3-1 defeat to Stoke on Wednesday, Graham Dorrans should replace him in central midfield. It's also possible that Nathan Redmond could replace Wes Hoolahan in the team, with the latter unlikely to be able to cope with two games in the space of three days.
Southampton Vs West Brom (15:00 KO)
Fraser Forster is expected to keep his place in-goal after returning to first-team action against Watford, a game in which he kept a clean sheet. In the same game Dusan Tadic grabbed the second of the game but also had made a league-high 100 open play crosses this season. Shane Long should keep his place upfront, 10 of his Southampton goals have been scored at St Mary's.
It could be a game for the defences as there have been just 3 goals scored in the last 5 league meetings between these two. So don't bank on it featuring near the top of the Match of the Day running order. Ronald Koeman can welcome back Victor Wanyama from suspension and he could come straight back into the team and Tadic could come back in for Matt Targett.
Aston Villa vs Leicester City (17:30 KO)
Aston Villa need something special to avoid relegation this season and it's not good news, the Villa have won only four of their 19 Premier League matches against Leicester and will be looking for back-to-back wins for thirst time since May 2015. Jamie Vardy owners may want to pay attention, since breaking the record for most consecutive games scored in vs Manchester United, Vardy has only managed 1 goal in 8 since.
Claudio Ranieri has very few injury concerns so can name what has become his favoured starting XI again following the win at Spurs. It could be time to back the Leicester City defence, they have kept three clean sheets in a row in the league for the first time since May 2015 but they've never kept four consecutively in the Premier League.
SUNDAY
Liverpool vs Manchester United (14:05 KO)
It's the biggest game of the weekend, two rivals go head to head looking for that all important three points. The managers Jurgen Klopp and Louis Van Gaal have met previously, 4 times to be exact with the head-to-head record standing at 2 wins each. Whilst Manchester United are not on a good run of form Van Gaal has won on all three fixtures against Liverpool during his time at Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney seems to have recaptured some form and has now scored four goals in his last three games, Liverpool's Roberto Firmino could pose a threat to United having scored two against Arsenal on Wednesday night. It's bad news for hilippe Coutinho, Martin Skrtel and Divock Origi will all miss out due to injury. Whilst Daniel Sturridge and Dejan Lovren are doubts.
Stoke City vs Arsenal (16:15 KO)
Stoke City host an inform Arsenal this weekend, Arsene Wenger's side have picked up 10 points in their last five games and are mounting a serious title charge. Some food for thought though Mark Hughes side have lost just one of their seven Premier League home ties vs Arsenal, and Hughes himself is unbeaten in his last seven matches against Arsene Wenger on home soil (W6, D2).
Arsenal will be looking towards Frenchman Oliver Giroud for goals; he currently has the best minutes per goal ratio of any Premier League player this season to score more than five times, netting every 117 minutes on average, whilst Jonathan Walters could prove an unlikely hero for Stoke. The Irishman has scored in three of his last four appearances for Stoke in all competitions; this after going nine games in a row without scoring for the Potters and has scored in three of his five Premier League appearances against the Gunners at the Britannia Stadium.
Arsenal could be handed with a massive boost as Alexis Sanchez is nearing a return although it may be too soon for the Chilean to return to action. Hughes has confirmed that Xherdan Shaqiri is likely to miss out once more having been ruled out of the game against Norwich with a hamstring injury.
MONDAY
Swansea vs Watford (20:00 KO)
Watford have been one of the surprise packages in this topsy-turvy Premier League season, with Swansea being one of the most disappointing. A quick look at the form table shows that both sides are struggling for form with both Swansea and Watford winning one of their last five games. The Hornets have lost just one of their last five competitive away games against the Swans (W2 D2 L1), but have only collected one point in their last four league games.
Andre Ayew ended a run of six Premier League games without scoring or assisting by netting in Swansea's last match against Sunderland. Gylfi Sigurdsson will also be looking to continue his form having scored in his last two Premier League appearances. The Liberty Stadium hasn't been a place for home wins this season with Swansea's only home win coming against Manchester United. The onus will be on Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo for goals on Monday night with the duo forming a formidable partnership.
