French football returns, following a fortnight's break over the Christmas period. A New Year begins, however, the league table remains unchanged. Paris Saint-Germain have opened up a 19-point gap at the top, which remarkably sees second-placed Monaco closer to the relegation zone (12-points above). While, at the other end, Troyes remain stranded, without a win in their last 20 Ligue 1 matches � the worst run in the competition's history! Can Bastia upset the odds by defeating the reigning champions and will Troyes stop the rot?

Tip 1 � Paris Saint-Germain to score a handful.
Just take a look at their goal-scoring potential in our table, which suggests they have an 85% chance of scoring 2 goals plus. PSG have won 11 of their last 12 matches in all competitions and are still the only club yet to lose a game among Europe's top 5 leagues. The Champions standout performer in recent weeks is
Angel Di Maria (17.3m), who has contributed with 4 assists in his last 3 Ligue 1 appearances, whilst scoring a brace in his most recent league match. The Argentine's tantalising form is underlined by his price tag, but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Another possible option is the usual suspect
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (20.5m). The Swede will have a high ownership, however with an average point per game total of 22.6 over his past 3 Ligue 1 matches on
Mondogoal, Ibrahimovic is somewhat irreplaceable.
Tip 2 � Lyon to win and justify their nickname.
Lyon host Troyes in perhaps the biggest mismatch of the weekend. Their visitors are planted at the bottom of the table without a win all season and have a devastating goal difference of -25. Taking this into consideration Troyes have a lot to prove, nevertheless so do their opponents. Lyon have failed to pick up the three points in all of their last 6 fixtures and are sitting 9th in the table - which is very disappointing having given PSG a run for their money in 2014/15, to eventually finish as runners-up. Turning to youth appears Lyon's best action plan to freshen things up and with their nickname ‘The Kids', it always seemed inevitable that this would be the case. Our two
Mondogoal recommendations, who could prove handy differentials for Gameweek 20 are 23-year-old midfielder
Rachid Ghezzal (7m) and 19-year-old striker
Maxwell Corgnet (3.5m). The pair each scored a brace in Lyon's Coupe De France tie on Sunday and will be pushing for a starting role. The latter, who scored in the Champions League vs. Valencia a fortnight ago, is more of a gamble. However, at 3.5m and the fact that Lyon are involved in the early kick-off, you can take advantage of the revealed line-up to check if he starts.
Tip 3 � No Clean Sheets as Rennes host Lorient.
Rennes have failed to keep a clean sheet on home soil since their season opener at the Roazhon Park. On the other hand, Lorient are a free-scoring outfit, despite struggling to find the net in recent weeks. An open encounter is expected with Rennes and Lorient planted in 6th and 7th spot respectively; a single point separates the pair and the eventual victor will move into touching distance of the top 4. Lorient's top goal-scorer Benjamin Moukandjo is doubtful for the trip to Rennes on Saturday, therefore, his strike partner
Majeed Waris (7.5m) will be their main source for goals. The Ghanaian striker possesses blistering pace and could definitely cause the Rennes defence some problems � remember they have conceded more goals at home than on the road this season.
Giovanni Sio (5.1m) offers excellent value in the Rennes frontline, with 5 goals this season and 14 shots on target in 17 appearances on
Mondogoal.
Tip 4 � Back the Saint-Etienne defence vs. Nantes.
Nantes' chief principle of picking up points is by starving their opposition of chances. They are always content with a draw versus the top sides, which is emphasised by their average of just 0.7 goals per game � the second-lowest in Ligue 1 this season. Taking a look at their last 5 League results (0-0, 1-1, 1-1, 0-0, 0-0) and it's not hard to see why we are predicting a low-scoring match. Despite lingering just below the top 4, Saint-Etienne have a terrible away record. This season they have scored just 6 times on their travels and have failed to find the net in 3 of their last 4 matches on the road. Nevertheless, with Nantes' laid back incentive to attack, we advice delving into the visitors back-four for clean sheets.
Loic Perrin (9.6m), although expensive, has always been a big favourite of ours on
Mondogoal; he tackles cleanly, intercepts frequently and also comes up with the goods offensively with 3 goals and 1 assist this season. A cheaper alternative is right-back
Kevin Malcuit (6.4m), he impressed before the festive break and will aim to nail down his place in 2016.
Tip 5 � Batshuayi to score his 12th of the season.
Guingamp have lost their last 5 Ligue 1 fixtures � their longest current losing streak. Marseille are unbeaten in their last 10 matches, in all competitions, with
Michy Batshuayi (11m) scoring 6 and assisting 2 over this period. According to Marseille's President Vincent Labrune, “There is not a single top 15 world club that is not interested in Batshuayi, He's proving himself on the pitch, and if clubs want him then they are going to have to pay around €50m.” We don't 100% believe this and feel it might be a shrewd ploy to make sure they get the best price possible, or even better, a way of fending off interest. He is a very appealing player for
Mondogoal, as his skill set suits their scoring system perfectly. The Belgian forward has 34 shots on target in Ligue 1 this season, which is the second highest of any player in this slate. Batshuayi also retains the ball well and is accomplished at setting up teammates, with 5 assists this season - which is the most from a striker barring Ibrahimovic.
