In last week's article, we looked at the issue that misplaced midfielders create in the world of FPL and if you backed Mohamed Salah as your captain, you would have had no issues at all. Then again, if you opted for Sadio Mane, your points return would not have been as plentiful.

While the mid-range option would have been Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and although his points return was not a complete bust, to get only 7 (or 14 if trusted with the captain's armband) was somewhat underwhelming.

When comparing Salah to Aubameyang, I guess the logic here is always try to opt for a home captain (even if the notion of home advantage has been somewhat nullified over the past few weeks and months) and had you opted for the Egyptian, that would have been a rocket boost to the season.

It may only be week 1, but let's take a quick look at the top points scorers thus far:

It seems as if Arsenal's Brazilian connection was the story of the week as Gabriel scored on his debut against Fulham, while also keeping a clean sheet at Craven Cottage and Willian become an assist machine for his new club.

Romain Saiss was perhaps an unlikely scorer for Wolves on Monday night, but once again a goal and a clean sheet would have returned a respectful points haul � something that 3.8% of FPL managers would have subsequently received.

As far as Leicester are concerned, they saw Jamie Vardy bag two goals from the penalty spot and in doing so earn 13 points for his troubles, but he was outshone by Belgian international Timothy Castagne, who earned 14 points.

It seems as goalscoring defenders seem to be in vogue and although Chelsea did not manage to keep a clean sheet, Reece James scored an absolute howitzer of a goal and would eventually pick up 14 FPL points for his efforts at The Amex.

The same amount that new boy Jeff Hendrick now has for Newcastle and after swapping Turf Moor for St James' Park, the Irish international will now look to add some element of flair to a sometimes uninspiring midfield.

Completing the top 10 on week 1 was Jorginho and Lucas Digne of Chelsea and Everton respectively, the former scoring from the penalty spot against Brighton and the latter assisting Dominic Calvert Lewin's winner against Tottenham.

Liverpool are undefeated in 35 of their last 38 matches (Premier League) � to be honest you probably knew that already.

Chelsea have been winning at both half time and full time in their last 6 home matches (Premier League) � you might not have been aware of this one and it is a stat that bodes well for Sunday afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace have failed to score in their last 4 away matches (Premier League) � good news if you are a Manchester United fan.

Jack Stephens (Southampton) has made the most inaccurate passes in the Premier League this season, with 22 � not a good start to his or the Saints' season.

What is interesting is that Southampton had the most possession in the opening weekend of the Premier League season (64%). Of course, their result shows that it is not how much you have of the ball, but what you do with it.

No Red Cards were awarded in the opening weekend of the Premier League season and I guess we must give a collective pat on the back to VAR, as John Moss was encouraged to use the monitor during Crystal Palace's win over Southampton.

An encouragement that saw Kyle Walker-Peters initial sending off overturned. If VAR can be used this sensibly, then it might not be the burden it was last season. Then again, this is only week 1 of the season and we perhaps should not get too ahead of ourselves.
