Matchday 9 Preview

Newcastle vs Chelsea

The Premier League returns from its second international break of the season and first up on the horizon is a visit to St James' Park, as mid-table Newcastle play host to a Chelsea side who are building up a head of steam right now.

The Magpies suffered a 2-0 defeat to Southampton in their last outing, while Frank Lampard's men will look to continue their current run of six Premier League matches without defeat.

Prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea

Aston Villa vs Brighton

Aston Villa may currently find themselves lying sixth in the table, but with the West Midlands outfit also possessing a game in hand and looking to continue their early upward mobility, things are certainly looking bright for Dean Smith's men.

A statement that cannot be said about Brighton at present and with no win in their last six league outings, the Seagulls need to turn decent performances into a decent amount of points as well.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

Tottenham vs Manchester City

Tottenham went into the international break lying second and although their early efforts should not be diminished in any way, they have had a rather easy start to the season in terms of fixtures. Which means a true test of their title credentials will soon be upon them.

The first module in this lengthy test, is the visit of Manchester City on Saturday and with Pep Guardiola's men yet to find their ignition spark, dropping more points is not on their agenda.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-2 Manchester City

Manchester United vs West Brom

Once again Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been given a stay of execution and although his head has been removed from the chopping block for now, you do get the feeling that in a month or so's time, the same discussion regarding his managerial status will present itself again.

While talking of managerial status, questions are starting to be asked about Slaven Bilic's tenure at the Hawthorns and if the Baggies suffer defeat this weekend, the writing could be on the wall.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 West Brom

Fulham vs Everton

Another manager who may also be looking over his shoulder in terms of managerial status is Scott Parker and with Fulham's start to the season being far from ideal, the former Tottenham midfielder knows that his players need to improve and rather quickly.

Will that improvement come this weekend? It's hard to say and with Everton losing all of their last three league outings, Carlo Ancelotti will be pinpointing this fixture as nothing less than a win.

Prediction: Fulham 0-2 Everton

Sheffield United vs West Ham

It really has been a start to forget for Sheffield United and with Chris Wilder still trying to mastermind his first league win of the season, there really is a fear that the Blades have lost the sharpness that was on show 12 months ago.

They play host to a West Ham side who have navigated through a tough start to the campaign and manager David Moyes will hope that the next few weeks, brings the Hammers plenty of points.

Prediction: Sheffield United 0-1 West Ham

Leeds vs Arsenal

Leeds are the entertainers at present, there's absolutely no doubt about that. Unfortunately, they are entertaining due to an extremely poor defence and after conceding eight goals in their last two league outings, manager Marcelo Bielsa knows that this will need to change.

This Sunday sees them play host to Arsenal and with the Gunners being in a state of one step forward and two steps back, it will be interesting to see what version turns up this weekend.

Prediction: Leeds 1-1 Arsenal

Liverpool vs Leicester

Has Liverpool's luck finally deserted them in terms of injuries? On the current evidence that is being presented to us, you would have to say it has and with the whole back four potentially injured, a visiting Brendan Rodgers will be licking his lips at the prospect of an Anfield return.

The Foxes reached the international break in top spot of the Premier League table and with Liverpool's list of absentees getting longer, there is every chance they will stay there come full time.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Leicester

Burnley vs Crystal Palace

Turf Moor is certainly not a happy place these days and with Burnley still looking for their first Premier League win of the season, manager Sean Dyche is cutting more of a frustrated figure on the touchline these days.

He's often linked with the Crystal Palace job and it is they who make the trip to Lancashire, as Roy Hodgson will look to show his younger managerial opponent just why he still has plenty of life left in him.

Prediction: Burnley 0-1 Crystal Palace

Wolves vs Southampton

It has been something of a mixed bag for Wolves thus far, as Nuno Espirito Santo's men have blown hot and cold in equal measures and with their unbeaten run being recently ended by Leicester, the Midlands outfit will now look to return to winning ways.

However, that will be easier said than done when you consider the opposition and with Southampton flying high, they will look to continue their own decent start to the campaign.

Prediction: Wolves 1-1 Southampton
