Matchday 8 Preview

Share post on:

Brighton vs Burnley

Another portion of Friday night football is on this weekend's agenda and of the two fixtures that get week eight of the season underway, the focus arguably lies further on the South Coast, as two struggling teams go head to head.

For Brighton it has most definitely been a case of performance over points and frustration for Graham Potter, while for Burnley it has been nothing short of a poor start to this new campaign.

Prediction: Brighton 1-0 Burnley

Southampton vs Newcastle

It is now five league games unbeaten for Southampton and after being such a model of consistency, it is fair to say that Ralph Hasenhuttl's men are looking upwardly mobile at this present moment in time.

They will look to extend their run to six on Friday, as they play host to Newcastle and with the Magpies getter the better of Everton last time around, they will be in a rather confident mood for this one.

Prediction: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

Everton vs Manchester United

Have the Toffee's come unstuck already? After failure to win any of their last three league outings and defeats in the last two, it certainly looks that way and manager Carlo Ancelotti will now be hoping his players can return to winning ways on Saturday.

To do so, they must get the better of a Manchester United side who have fared far better away than they have at home and it is fair to say that the pressure is building on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Prediction: Everton 1-1 Manchester United

Crystal Palace vs Leeds

Last Friday night saw Crystal Palace out of shape and out of sorts, as they lost 2-0 away at Wolves and with the Premier League table being as tight as it is right now, any defeat will have serious repercussions in terms of overall standing.

While the same can be said for a Leeds side who were thrashed by Leicester on Monday night and after being handed such a heavy defeat, a trip to Selhurst Park will be a genuine test of this squad's character.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-2 Leeds

Chelsea vs Sheffield United

It is amazing what confidence can do to a team and that is exactly what Chelsea possess since switching their goalkeeping personnel, as not only have they picked up four points from back to back away matches, but they've also kept a pair of clean sheets.

This weekend sees them play host to a Sheffield United side, who are still looking for their first win and the longer this goes on, the more people will spout the cliché ‘second season syndrome'.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Sheffield United

West Ham vs Fulham

David Moyes will probably be able to breathe a sigh of relief now, as West Ham have navigated their horror run of opening fixtures and with those hurdles cleared, the Hammers will look to get the wins that their performances have arguably deserved.

They play host to fellow Londoners Fulham and with the Cottagers finally getting their first win of the season on Monday, are the clouds finally lifting for Scott Parker and his players?

Prediction: West Ham 2-1 Burnley

West Brom vs Tottenham

If the clouds are lifting for Fulham, they certainly are not for West Brom and the Baggies are still looking for their first win of the season, as Slaven Bilic prepares for the visit of high-flying Tottenham this Sunday lunchtime.

Jose Mourinho's men have some tight fixture scheduling to deal with, so changes may have to be made and this might just nullify any hopes of making it three Premier League wins in a row.

Prediction: West Brom 1-1 Tottenham

Leicester vs Wolves

The woodland derby takes place on Sunday as the Foxes take on the Wolves and with Leicester lying second at the start of proceedings, they could find themselves by the top of the night if results later go their way.

If Brendan Rodgers' men can get the better of Wolves, they will certainly go top for a few hours at least and they will then have to hope for a favour from Manchester City at the Etihad.

Prediction: Leicester 3-1 Wolves

Manchester City vs Liverpool

The first titanic clash of the season is on the horizon, as Manchester City play host to Liverpool and if Pep Guardiola's men lose this one, their hopes of winning back the Premier League trophy could already become something of a shipwreck.

City go up against a Liverpool side who have climbed back to the summit of the Premier League table and even though their defensive ranks have been depleted, the red machine marches on.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool

Arsenal vs Aston Villa

Arsenal may not be the most exciting team to watch this season, but there is an element of effectiveness to their play and after earning a 1-0 win over Manchester United last week, there is a sense that the process is slowly working under manager Mikel Arteta.

While Aston Villa have perhaps been one of the more exciting teams in the division and even though they lost 3-4 to Southampton last weekend, they have kept their scoring prowess ticking at one end, while their defence lets them down at the other.

Prediction: Arsenal 1-0 Aston Villa
