Fantasy MLS Tips - Mondogoal Daily Fantasy Football Advice - Round 16 - June 20th, 2015
For the purposes of this article, all prices and points are via our partners Mondogoal.
This week gives us a bit of a fuller roster selection to choose from for this round's MLS matches. Mondogoal has broken the weekend down into a variety of contests, so you really get your pick of how to build your most effective lineup. The contests range from Saturday and Sunday exclusive leagues all the way to contests that span the eight matches from Saturday and Sunday combined - be aware that Colorado and Dallas currently aren't offered for a Friday game (no loss there, right?).
But the best news is that only two teams, Chicago and Columbus, are on bye weeks to go along with Colorado's and Dallas's exemption. So chances are your lucky player will be available to you this weekend.
For a fuller evaluation of the options available to you, let's break down the best players by position -- and then we'll round it out by offering the best value picks to push your team over the edge and on to victory. But before we do that, here are the matches playing this weekend:
Saturday:
Seattle vs. San Jose
NYRB vs. Vancouver
Toronto vs. NYCFC
Montreal vs. Orlando
L.A. vs. Philadelphia
Portland vs. Houston
Sunday:
D.C. vs. New England
Real Salt Lake vs. Sporting Kansas City
STRIKER TIPS
Seattle will now be without their main striker,
Obafemi Martins, due to injury. So the next place you're going to have to look for a quality forward would be....Houston? Let's preface this by saying that Houston are on the road against a very stout Portland defence. Portland have only allowed one goal in their last three matches.
But
Will Bruin is on some kind of a tear here lately. Bruin has six goals in his last five matches. His last two point tallies were 21.43 and 17.19. But you'll have to pick him up at the higher price of $12.6. If you were ever going to take a chance on a player's form overcoming their fixture, this would be that time.
Sebastian Giovinco is listed as a forward for Mondogoal, and he is a must have this week playing at home. His price is a truly staggering $16.8 - but he has the goods to back it up. He has 15 shots over his last five games - and his last score was a very impressive 25.16 points. Out of every forward available this week, he leads the pack in Shots On Target with 28 on the year. One way or another, he's going to give himself opportunities to score.
On the other side of that match, look at
David Villa for the great price of $8.6. Villa has come into form recently and his price hasn't quite caught up with his level of production. He bounced back wonderfully this last week with a score of 22.88 points. Add that stat to his 26 Shots On Target and you have another player who's going to get you points when he gets on the ball.
MIDFIELDER TIPS
Benny Feilhaber ($12.5) is back in action after a week away, and I'm going to be high on him this week, even though he's on the road against RSL.
Feilhaber has a goal in each of his last two games and turned in scores of 14.7 and 11.35 points. Those aren't staggering numbers, but he should be coming back fresh. He's the tether that binds that offence together - and he's fourth in the Average Points per Game category of the midfielders available this weekend.
Also look at
Darlington Nagbe this week at home. Though he's not been seen as a goal scoring threat, he has put in 3 Shots on Target in his last two matches. But the stat that sets
Nagbe apart is his Fouls Won stat. On the year,
Nagbe has 45 FW -- easily the top of the list for mids. In fact, without scoring a goal, this stat allowed him to rake in 13.75 points in his last match. And
Nagbe isn't too terribly priced at $11.3.
Finally, look to
Ignacio Piatti for $9.6.
Piatti laid a bit of an egg last week on the road, but he's back home now. He should be looking to get close to his last score while at home, a nifty 19.7 points off of two shots and a goal. Some players have a dramatic difference in home and away scores, and it looks like
Piatti is going to be one of those guys. And his price means that he can round out your squad without bankrupting you.
GOALKEEPER & DEFENCE TIPS
This is where things get tricky. The MLS clubs are playing in the Open Cup this week, and several games are going into extra time. There could be some tired legs for attackers this week. So your defenders and keeper picks may fair better than normal. For this reason, you could reasonably pick a 4-Defender formation and find some success. Instead of finding individual players, let's look at the teams with the best chances at defending as a whole.
Seattle: Seattle play against San Jose this week, and both teams played 120 minutes in their cup games.
Chris Wondolowski for San Jose was one of those players that played extended minutes. So it's reasonable to think that Seattle should be able to really compete for another clean sheet this week.
Stefan Frei ($10.3) now has 8 clean sheets on the year, and he could make it 9 in this fixture. If you play the keeper/defender combo style, you could easily add
Tyrone Mears ($8.8) or
Chad Marshall ($7.5) to the mix in the back and have a successful day.
Portland: Even though Portland are going up against
Will Bruin this week, they've played very well as a defensive unit (again, only allowing one goal over the course of the last three matches).
Adam Kwarasey ($8.1) may be a better value than
Frei if you're looking to free up a few dollars. Also look at
Liam Ridgewell ($7.5). He was given rest during the cup match, so he'll be fresh. He also has a very respectable 502 Passes Completed on the year to bolster his scores.
D.C.: D.C. play at home against New England, and their defense looks to be getting back into full health.
Bill Hamid ($10.6) was able to allow only one goal last week, but he also blocked a PK while doing so. Take a look at
Bobby Boswell for a cheap $6.9 - his 48 Passes Intercepted on the year leads the backline for D.C.
BARGAIN BUYS
Now that you've decided which type of game you want to play, you still need to round out your squad with some value options.
For defenders, look at
Donny Toia ($5.6) from Montreal.
Toia has been a nailed-on starter and in his last home outing scored a respectable 5.01 points. Also,
Dan Gargan ($5.8) has scored 5+ points in three of his last four matches. A home fixture for
Gargan against a Philly side that has just been dealt an injury to
LeToux could produce points that outpace his cost.
In the midfield,
Jorge Villafana out of Portland has been in great form considering his $7.2 price tag. He has 7+ points in three of his last four matches, and he's now been given some latitude to contribute in the free kicks. And consider
Jonathan Osorio at $6.5 since Toronto will be playing at home. He's averaged 5.66 points a game over his last three matches, and the thought that he could assist
Giovinco is ever-present.
For the forwards, try
Gyasi Zardes for $6.3 if you're playing a third forward this week. A home fixture for him should see him return to producing points above his 4.2 average. Also,
Jack McInerny is a very low priced option at $4.9 - an almost absurd price for a nailed-on starter at home. In
Jack Mack's last home game, he was able to post a score of 13.01 points.
FORMATIONS
Given the heavy slog of the US Open Cup play this week, you could add a fourth defender to your lineup without too much worry. We still think that a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3 is the best bet, but there may be several teams with a rotation issue this round that will cause problems in attack.
Either way, never forget the most important rule of verifying as many starting lineups as you can prior to locking in your team. I've played several games this week against people that simply took too many 0's because they weren't around to change their lineups in time. Half the battle is simply picking starters.
