Fixture: Montpellier vs Dijon
League: Ligue 1
Venue: Stade de la Mosson
Date: Saturday 14th January
Kick-off: 19:00 GMT
In a battle in the bottom half of the table, an inconsistent Montpellier side will feel confident that they can keep up their excellent home form from recent weeks. The hosts have come away victorious in four of their last five matches at Stade de la Mosson which has kept them hovering around mid-table, despite some shaky performances.
The key to home success largely boils down to their improved defensive displays when in front of their home crowd. Their three clean sheets in three consecutive home matches is a testament to that. Montpellier have also taken care of business on the other end of the pitch with Ryad Boudebouz, who escaped selection for AFCON, and Steve Mounie overwhelming defenses through the middle of the pitch.
Meanwhile, Dijon just managed to pick up their first win in nine matches. The Ligue 1 strugglers have comparable attacking and defensive records to the hosts, but disciplinary issues and mental lapses always seem to cost Dijon in the end. The visitors’ dismal away record won’t inspire much confidence either.
In truth, there isn’t a huge gap in quality between these two sides and considering both are attack-heavy teams we should be in store for quite an exciting affair.
While this match could very well turn into a shootout, the edge has to go to Montpellier. Their defense has been at its very best when at home and their attackers are more than capable of breaking down a backline, especially one such as Dijon’s.
